Is it safe to assume that anyone who ordered in the last week or two probably missed the January cut off for allocation?

I would say the answer to that would vary dealer to dealer, and based on the reactions of the customers in line before you in relation to their wait times. So no, it's not safe to assume that (which is a good thing in that case!).
In any case, you really need to talk to your dealer.

Received a call from VGA and have been advised that my order is slotted into build week 13 with an ETA of June/July. Strange, as my dealer confirmed the same ETA from VGA, however, his build date was week 9. Maybe dealer has not got the latest news2011 POLO GTI 3dr, Candy White, Audio-Comfort-Xenon PacksMODS: H&R Sport Springs - Bilstein B12s - Whiteline Sway Bar - Milltek Cat Back Exhaust - Sparco Assetto Gara Wheels

I was told today that my dealers allocation for the polo gti was 4... yes 4 cars for the entire year. Apparently its not set in stone as of yet, but seriously that's pathetic if true. They also mentioned that 12 people had orders. I ordered mine mid december so I guess ill have to wait and see.

I got a call today, my dealer is getting 7 for 2011. Despite ordering a few days before it went on sale I missed out, I was told I could keep my order and hope for delivery early in 2012, but that wasn't guaranteed.
It's easier to buy a Ferrari than a $30k VW......
Time to decide on a different car.
I'm not sure why VWA paid to advertise on TV, billboards etc for a car that they refuse to sell to people!

lol at this. im in the market for a car but im selling the one im currently driving. im in no hurry obviously as my current car serves me fine, i just want something newer.
for the price range $30-40k, there r heaps out there, and i would never buy new. im leaning towards a near new golf gti, or even bumping a little more and getting a 2yo audi s3.
i wouldnt even bother with the polo gti for the next 6 months, but im a patient person i guess, i dont need to impress people with the latest and greatest2011 cw golf gti 3dr man-tint-rear cargo mat-weathershields-bluetooth-mdi-19" oz racing ultra leggera-mcgard lockbolts-boston acoustic pro60se-jl audio xd700/5-jl audio bass tube bb-w060p- titanium exhaust tips-eibach custom pro-kit-OPS-OSIR cf mirror covers and cf front lip-dieselgeek short shifter

6 months? Those will be when the very first ones arrive, add another 12 months to that for any hope of getting one. People aren't buying them to 'impress' anyone. It's a brilliant car with great value, just extremely annoying that you can't actually buy one.

If you aren't fussy on options have a good check through the dealers around the country; they may have sold but believe there are two at the Tassie dealers in stock waiting for new owners. Northern Territory and other dealers out of the major metropolitan centres may have stock or allocation allowance that could be chased up if you are willing to do a bit of leg work [Cartage costs for a car across the country is actually pretty reasonable].6R Polo TDI; DSG

I suggest you send an email to both VW Germany and Aus as I did, and remind them of the Consumer Law we have here re Misleading and Deceptive Conduct under the Competition and Consumer Act 2011 (formerly know as the Trade Practices Act)
Misleading & deceptive conduct
What is misleading & deceptive conduct?
There is a very broad provision in the Trade Practices Act that prohibits conduct by a corporation that is misleading or deceptive, or would be likely to mislead or deceive you.
It makes no difference whether the business intended to mislead or deceive you—it is how the conduct of the business affected your thoughts and beliefs that matters.
If the overall impression left by an advertisement, promotion, quotation, statement or other representation made by a business creates a misleading impression in your mind—such as to the price, value or the quality of any goods and services—then the conduct is likely to breach the law.
You have nothing to lose
