Should have bought a Corolla at this rate of failures...
Booked in for Monday. Let's see what's wrong this time...

      • First issue occurred over the weekend for me. Check engine light came on. Took car to VW and was asked to bring it back Monday. Start the car today and what do you know no light to be found. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come. Also seem to have an intermittent issue with the usb input dropping out.

        • The little Polo was looked at today, and the DPF (diesel particulate filter) is full of ash, which, unlike soot, cannot be burned off through regeneration. They tried a forced regen, then an emergency regen but with no luck. A replacement DPF is circa $3500 and that is without labour.

Considering VW say the DPF should be maintenance free for about 300,000 kms, or roughly eight years, we will push as hard as possible for this to be replaced under Australian Consumer Law or VW goodwill.
I'll also bring up the fact that we told them, on multiple occasions, that the car was not running properly/stalled while driving etc. and that they failed to replace any defective part until several months later, denied the car was at fault, and blamed it on "your driving style".
The parts at fault back then were the injectors, which were causing the DPF to regenerate every two days which I think would significantly reduce the working lifespan of the unit.

Hopefully we can come up with a solution for this...

          • That is a shocking run your family has had with this car, Alex (mice eating wiring, damper failure, brakes...) but this takes the cake.

Would you mind reposting this in the Diesel subforum, plus the followup? One of the experts there might even be able to help.

Tell me about it. Seriously considering a second hand Kia now.
Yeah I'll post it in the diesel forum soon, thanks for reminding me

              • If considering 2ndhand, have a look at a 9N3 Polo TDi - they're cheap now and very reliable

Yeah that could be a good option. I'll have a good look around.

                  • On this facebook page there is a 300kw SEAT Ibiza for $7500. Car looks amazing. If I had a spare bit of cash it would be sold already.

Early spectrum chassis for sale with all panels and fuel tank. Fit vw engine ,g/box, front end would make great hill climb car.

It was posted on 20 March so theres a lot of scrolling required.

Even if you dont get this one, keep an eye out for SEAT as well as 9N3.

Success... VW found the DPF was full of soot and for some reason the stationary regeneration didn't happen, but they drove it on a freeway for one hour (supposedly) and that fixed it. We did try this after the warning lights came on, but limp mode stopped us from going anywhere over 50 kph. I guess VW reset the ECU or something to bring it out of limp, and then just drove it.

The invoice also says they did a software update, bulletin 2022419/8.

They still charged $250 for labour, but oh well...

                        • Polos cannot do a stationary (forced) regeneration, only an active/passive regen by driving.

Ok that explains it. Nonetheless it's fixed for now.

Glad to hear your car is fixed.

Just a quick question, you said the DPF was full of ash, and that a forced and an emergency regen didn't work. Seeming it turned out to be soot, wouldn't the emergency regen at least have gotten rid of the anger management light? From what you've said, I think something is a bit sus with your VW stealership.

If taking it out of limp mode and it just needed a good drive was the case, wouldn't the dealership have just taken it out of limp mode, and told you to go give it a good boot up the motorway for an hour? I don't understand how some of these places can misdiagnose like that and then charge you for something as simple as that!

The 'full of ash' diagnosis was said by an independent we had to go to because VW had no time to look at the car. When VW eventually had some time to look at it, their diagnosis was soot. I wondered the same thing about why they charged us for them to drive it, but I suppose they wanted to make sure it did actually fix it, instead of us driving it and then having it go straight back to VW if it didn't work.
