Arrrgggghhhhh! I've got the normal tartan GTI seats - not faux leather.
I have the exact same problem. Additionally, the seat base in ours seems loose. If you rock back and forward in the seat, the whole base of the seat moves. We've had it back to VW twice now. First time they said they tightened the seat base screws and it, "tested fine". Second time they identified the loose seat base, but said that's how all Polo GTi seats are. After they "tightened the seat base screws", the seat has definitely been higher than it was before too. When you look at the seat base from the passenger side, the actual arms that drive the seat up and down are sitting slightly higher than flat, so I dunno what they did to it, but it's now sitting higher than before too. I'm taking the car into the service manager tomorrow to show him what I mean. No doubt I'll get the old, "They're all like that, mate. It's normal." We'll see how we go. I told him on the phone today, either way I'll be getting it fixed. Whether they do it or I complain to VW Australia.

Haven't read through every single post in this thread - just a general scan.

Had my Polo GTI MY 12.5 for exactly a year now, and just starting having some problems with rough idling. Some days it is fine, others the whole car trembles.

Taken it to VW service twice - the first time was a general check over where no fault was found. The second was for software updates.

I'd like to have full faith in the service team, but can't help feel a little anxious/annoyed over the issue.

Anyone had a similar issue or know what it may be?

      Thanks
      Jess
Sounds like a fouled plug and/or dodgy coilpack...

Just keep pushing VW to fix it. I think someone had a majority of their seat replaced and the squeaks are gone.

At my 15k, im going to get them to look at the squeaks again. If they tell you its meant to be like that dont take their bulltish!

I also remember reading somewhere (it could have been else where) that someone on delivery, found a crack on the interior of the door where the electric windows switch is located and got it replaced. Was that someone here or am I thinking something totally different?!

        • Thanks for the suggestion Gavs. What can I do about this? Can I request that VW service look at this item in particular?

So I went to VW this morning, and spoke to the Service Manager for the dealership. He had a good look at both seats and conceded that there's definitely a problem with the seat rocking backwards and forwards, and agreed to fix it.

He called me back about 10 minutes after I left the dealership and said that when he was looking at their system to order the part, he said that there is an updated part for the seat base and raising mechanism. He asked if I would like to wait a couple weeks until that part is available for him to order, to which I said yes. If it's going to take more than 2 weeks, he will order the current one and install that in the drivers side first, then if that works, we'll do the same with the passenger side.

Bit of a win I suppose, though it shouldn't be so hard to get something done like a broken seat that is so obviously faulty.

Just say that is misfiring when cold and that it never used to do it. How many kms have you done? Do you have any oil consumption issues? They should be able to take a look at it no probs...

              • So ive got DSG issues (again)
First time around the clutch destroyed itself at 12k kms. It doesnt seem to change down to a low enough gear around low speed corners. When coming out of the corner, it rides the clutch.... They have replaced the clutch, but its doing the same thing. Im assuming this clutch wont last past 25k kms.

Now ive had on two occasions the car stuck in a "semi neutral" situation. At the lights, go to take off all of a sudden no drive (gets to maybe 3kph). Car wont rev past 1500 rpm so its not like its in neutral. Putting it into manual, sports, park back to drive etc doesnt help. Turn the car off, turn it back on and all is well. The last time it happened, I was almost run into.
Rang the service centre, bring it in and we'll update the software.
Still using a **** tonne of oil (within acceptable limits im told) Im getting sick of buying oil to put in it. Im up to 16l and ive just cracked 18,500 kms.
Time for it to go soon.

Be no if you join the class action then you should be able to fight for compensation. RE Software update for the false neutrals, I highly doubt that it will be fixed. RE the clutch issue, you will never fix this unless you get the aftermarket dsg tune done because not only does it fix issues regarding clamp pressure (reducing the slip issues that burn out the clutches) it also reprograms the shift points so a 2nd gear corner is taken in 2nd, not 4th or 3rd anymore. Peak hour speeds are done in 1st as they should be, not in 2nd while constantly slipping the clutch. Unfortunately, good luck getting warranty done on the dsg with the aftermarket software in its brain!

Side note, what build month is your car?

                  • Following on from my loose seat scenario. Dealer Service Manager called the other day and said he'd been in contact with VW Technical and had read some literature on the seat base issue, and asked if I could bring the car in because he wanted to make some adjustments to the seat. I agreed and took the car in yesterday morning. Yesterday afternoon at about 4PM I get a phone call asking if I could leave the car there overnight as they were still working on it and they had to wait for the Service Manager to come in, as he wasn't there yesterday. Why you would need 2 days to pull a seat out and make some adjustments is beyond me, but moving on. Got a call this morning at around 11:30 AM stating that the Service Manager has had a look at the car, and agrees that we will now need to order a part for it and that they can't do anything with adjustments.

This is now the 4th time I've had the car at the dealership to fix this problem. The first time I was told it's normal (to have a drivers seat rock backwards and forwards is normal at VW is it?). Now a total of 4 trips for the same issue, and I'm still going to have to go back again for the new seat base. I'm now being told that I have to wait for the superseded part to be able to be ordered, to which they cannot give me a time frame.

So, 4 times to the dealership for the same problem, only to be told that now I have to wait for an unknown amount of time so that they can order a part to then have to go back to the dealer again to have it installed, to which I still don't know if that will fix the problem.

I'm starting to really see what all these people are saying who have come out in the media, on sites like Carsales etc, about VW treating them poorly and with contempt. My last car was a Mitsubishi, and I thought the service from them was bad at the time, so made the change to VW. Looking back, in comparison, the Mitsubishi service was 10x better and more professional.

Won't be buying a VW ever again.

                    • To be honest I found the software update to be good. I haven't had a false neutral since it was put on and that was over a year ago. So as far as I am concerned it HAS stopped the false neutral.

And I would think with all the crap my gearbox is doing current it would have false neutraled but it hasn't so they have clearly fixed a bug.

And when I'm talking about all the "crap" my gearbox is doing I'm talking about it dropping the clutches in most gears - especially lower gears. When you said you didn't want yours to slip...well mine took it way too litterery. I could only wish for it to slip the clutch.

Hey Gavs on that note looked back though my paperwork from the time I got my original clutches fixed (27,000km) and my 30,000 service was only 3000km and within that time I noticed the problem (and have had it ever since).

I'm solely looking at the dealership who "fixed" up my car..."fixed" it up real good. Becuase before then it was a dream to drive, now I feel like I'm driving with a Learner trying to do stick!

                      • Does anyone have a problem with excessive engine braking? If i'm going slightly downhill at 70 to 80kph, the dsg downshifts and keeps the revs up to 4k rpm. It happens even if I'm not on the brakes. Most of the time I just change up manually.

Is this a normal dsg thing or should i be concerned?

                        • Yep normal.

Originally these gearboxes didn't used to do this (back in 2010 they implemented it I believe) but since then a software update allowed the gearbox to use engine braking for cruise control and normal hill descent.

If you don't touch the brakes at all it won't shift up at all but if you touch the brake for even a second, as you head down the hill and your speed increases it will start kicking back gears to hold your speed (this is done automatically with the cruse control without having to even push the brake)

I have seen it rev up to 4500rpm on mine before it decided to shift up a gear which personally I think is way too high. 3000rpm would be my limit but that's just how it is

To reset the speed its trying to hold just tap the accelerator and it will shift down to the lowest gear

                          • So to (almost) finish my seat story for anyone still playing along...

The dealership service manager called me the other day and said he had the new, upgraded seat base part for the Polo GTi. They had the car for a full day and the seat is now perfect. No noises, no rattles, no movement - it's tight as a drum. Now I just have to get the passenger side base replaced and we're done.

So, to anyone out there whose seat moves a bit, or rattles or squeaks, there's an updated, brand new seat base and raising mechanism part that's just been released to replace the original item, most likely due to the issues with squeaky and wobbly seats.

                            • Would you know if there is a TPI for the seat squeak? Or any more info on it? Part number etc?

                              Comment

                              • Don't think there's a TPI, well, that's what I was told at least. I believe there's a part number on the invoice I received when I picked the car up the other day. I'll try to dig it out and post up as soon as I can.
