Yes, the little spanner did flash on and off where the "P" is displayed in your picture. Could it have something to do with the fact he was messing around with the locking/unlocking buttons on the key fob prior to starting the car again? It's still got two years under warranty, that's got to count for something, right? Many thanks to everyone who's responded by the way, much appreciated.
Antu_R, sorry I took so long to see this.

What you have described is a failure of the mechatronics unit. Luckily it's able to be reset with turning the car on and off again. Luckily, see below and there is indeed a software update for the car but in my opinion, stay away.

Mine does this mate - initially it was the clutches. I've had a couple new clutches and a new DSG and I went back yesterday, and when the 'senior tech' went for a drive with me, especially on an incline, he tried to tell me it's a charateristic of the 7sp DSG and that it's because the engine is idling too low so the clutch isn't fully engaged. His solution, put it into Manual mode so it revs higher.

I still haven't got results of the diagnostics machine so will wait for that because I challenge it.

      • The original clutches I had went prematurely @ 22,000km but since I got the new updated ones I have had no clutch wearing problems (now at 45,000km).

I have another problem however where in the lower gears the gearbox hesitates to enable the clutch and then drops it all of a sudden. I don't know if this is the fault of the update (which was also applied when the new clutches were put in) or something else. The update does make a difference in the way it handles the change between 1-2 so its worth it to get it updated. I then got a new mechatronics unit with the original software and it still did it just the same (actually worse: the 1-2 shift was shockingly slow) so I am willing to eliminate GEARBOX software.

I think something else is wrong with mine...just my luck

That the specific dsg senior tech or the older workshop manager? I'd be printing out the relevant TPI and showing the tech and also the service manager and asking why this wasn't considered.... And then ask why my GTI doesn't do it when you took it for a drive

          • FYI - Software Update for DSG is terrible - advise against it.

First engages a lot quicker but it feels like its 'jumping' as you take your foot off the brake - not great in city traffic. The change from 1st to 2nd is now really noticable - it's like the car lurches forward as the gear engages.

Overall with my usual drive home (20kms) from work, it was all over the place.

Strange, I had the update done yesterday and I don't notice any real difference (possible because I had no gripes with my DSG to start with). If anything I feel that the DSG is faster and smoother than it was before.

On a side note, I will be starting my consumption test next Tuesday and getting my rear bumper fixed.

Just as a heads up for people regarding VW TPI's etc, if a dealership gives you the general 'it's confidential' bulltish, I can tell you for a fact that it isn't. Any member of the public can setup an account with erWin and for a fee, get all the TPI information they like relative to their VIN or any other Volkswagen VIN that they have.

I have downloaded in the region of 12 different TPI's that are relevant to the 6r polo (specifically GTI) and to give you an idea, there was probably another 40+ on there that I didn't download.

This is also good ammo for when asking a dealership about an update etc when they say 'know nothing about it, there is no problem' because if there is a TPI regarding the issue (if its common then 9/10 times there will be) then they do know and they're just palmin you off.

We've decided to stay away from that particular car. Took it for another drive yesterday (I drove this time so RPM went >2500 lol) and even though the gearbox issue didn't return there was a loud vibrating noise coming from under the dash somewhere that continued as long as I had my foot pressed on the accelerator. Rattles and vibrations drive me nuts so I wouldn't have bought it based on that fact alone. Also, in the 25 minute drive, the oil temp didn't even register, it just had the "---" on the display. My Golf R registers the min 50° within about 5 mins of driving. That was concerning too. After digging a bit deeper, we've decided to wait until an example with the CTHE engine becomes available as I've heard/seen nothing but negative reports on the CAVE engine. Warranty or no warranty, I know VW are always reluctant to come through with claims so it's a definite no for us right now.
Out of curiosity, has anyone that owns a Polo GTI with the CTHE engine in it noticed oil consumption issues or even worse, ended up with holes in pistons? If even the CTHE versions are havi g issues, I'm disappointed to say I'll be avoiding Polo's entirely. It's such a shame there's so many issues as they're so much fun to drive. I had a blast giving it a brap, yesterday but with all those potential gremlins in the back of my mind, I cannot justify parting with the $30k odd and heartache that might go along with it.

                      • I've had a CTH since mid Jan, done almost 8000km, so far no issues with oil consumption or any problems with DSG.

Sounds like I got that update when they installed the new clutch packs

Driving mostly in manual mode nowadays though, can't trust the computer!

Same here. Took delivery 17 Jan this year and have just ticked over 8000km without even a hint of a problem. Fuel consumption is 6.9-7.2L/100km every fill up.

                            • I'm experiencing a ticking/clicking sound from the front passenger seat that only seems to occur when I've got someone seated in it. It's particularly noticeable when going over bumps and seems to happen at all levels of adjustment.
I had the car booked in yesterday to have it checked and what do you know, the ticking wasn't there when I tried to replicate it...
Anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be? Or anywhere I can check myself to try and remedy it. I've tried fiddling with the height adjustment pump and the underseat drawer - it's driving me absolutely nuts!
