Definitely a lemon Polo

Hi guys,

I have a Polo Tsi now has done 31,200 km since 2010.

Here are the previous break down of this crap.

1.) New clutch for the dsg at 16,000 km why? it shudder at engaging 2nd gear under load for example going up hill. (2 weeks waiting period)
2.) Replace plastic cover around driver power window. Guess what it crack again.
3.) Engine Management light turned on earlier this year, makes the car limp home mode three times. Once it turned on while I was in major intersection at incoming tram track.
4.) radio keep skipping the channel I save as preset. It has to be turn off and on again to get it back to normal.
5.) now for the last 5 weeks until now my car still in the service because of:-
Loud rattling noise during engine warm lasting for 7 minutes. Sounded like knocking noise. The mechanic reckon it is the loose chain in the oil pump. This spare parts is not available so they have to order it in from Germany.

At 31,000km+ the brake disc apparently warp - the steering wheel shakes when the car slowing down from high speed let say slowing down from the high way. Unfortunately this is not under warranty as I have told the foreman that the car is still below 50,000k.

6.) oh one more thing my friend have the same model as mine, he also have similar rattling noise during warm up for 5 minutes and his driver window doesn't close half way.

As this is my first brand new car, i thought these issues have become a sentimental value. However would I buy it again or recommend this thing to a friend of mine in the future, I would say no. Looks and performs great when you need it but reliability just disappointing for a German Automobile.

I'm sorry to hear of all these problems, you would expect more of a German car, wouldn't you?
I know all about the brakes, trust me. In fact, I believe it might be a ****ty batch of brakes for the 2010 models, because we have a 2010 TDI (which has the same front brakes as the GTI I believe – yes Gavs?) and they warped on ours at ~30,000 km. Same symptoms as yours – shaking steering wheel during braking, not covered under warranty. Luckily, however, only the front discs were affected – the rear's on ours are still going strong!

Oh well, hopefully you get your other issues fixed soon.

I know all about the brakes, trust me. In fact, I believe it might be a ****ty batch of brakes for the 2010 models, because we have a 2010 TDI (which has the same front brakes as the GTI I believe – yes Gavs?) and they warped on ours at ~30,000 km. Same symptoms as yours – shaking steering wheel during braking, not covered under warranty. Luckily, however, only the front discs were affected – the rear's on ours are still going strong!

Oh well, hopefully you get your other issues fixed soon.

Correct but unless you subject the brake discs to massive thermal shock, you aren't going to warp them. This is a massively contentious issue but you just can't do it. What you think is warping is uneven pad material deposition. Like corrugations in a road surface it progressively gets worse over time.

Way to fix it? Machining the discs or new discs and then do a proper bed in that I will bet, very few people have actually ever done. The dealers don't do it and the factory sure as hell doesn't do it. "Warped disc" is just an easy way out for most mechanics who don't have any idea about the true problem. If you want to contest this, fine but speak with Greg Latham at GSL Rallysport first because this info comes directly from him.

Oh, the car is also south African or spanish. You will struggle finding much that is German in the car

That's ok Gavs, I understand the whole 'uneven pad deposition' and I don't want to contest it. I was just using the same language that was used in the quote to help the writer of that post better understand what I was talking about.

And yeah, I know they're built in South Africa/Spain, but they were designed and supposedly tested in Germany, no? Surely no matter where the car is made, the company who makes it should test that model of car, and make sure it is put together properly before it reaches the general public. Would you not agree?

Thanks Gav, Have you heard anything about this Oil Pump issue from the chain being "loose" and creating a knocking noise for the first 7 minutes? I have been waiting for the part from Germany for the last 5 weeks. My friend who had the same model just told me, since i've mentioned about my car's problem he is now paranoid about the similar noise for the first five minutes.

Thanks for the acknowledgement with the 2010 models. I hope this is the last major fix on the car as I have not been entirely satisfied with service marathon on this car since i bought it.

Hey guys, I notice there was some Shell bashing on the previous page. My Aunt has a Polo GTI 6R and she fills up with nothing but Shell 98. As do I and the rest of my VW supporting family. I managed to get around 590KM to a tank of Shell 98 (developed with Ferrari or some crap) and the longest trip I drove was from Doncaster Rd to Princes Hwy (about 30 minutes) and haven't had any issues with it.

Are people really having that much trouble? I tried using BP Ultimate and only managed to get 520KM and that was driving around constantly with little to no stopping.

I Use Caltex Vortex 98...manage to get around 620/650km with mixture of city/Urban driving. (590 If throttle bashing in the same conditions).

****! 620/650 km's! I fill up with V-Power and only manage to get 500-550 km's! Then again I only drive urban.

The cars too fun to drive to worry about saving fuel!

No, yours is the first case I have heard of.

Hail's is a 1.2TSI not GTI so that probably explains the better fuel economy, however I generally average 6.8L/100km, mixed cycle driving since removing the resonator from my car, I used to get 7.1L/100km. That being said, I'm topping up after about 560-570kms when the light comes on...

In the last month or so my car has developed a rattle which sounds like it is coming from the either the rear doors or the seat belts. Took a VW technician for a drive on Friday and he thought it was coming from further back maybe the tailgate or tailgate hinge. It sounds a bit like someone sending morse code. Any one else had this problem?

Any way the car is booked in to have a closer look on Wednesday.
