  • VW Polo Water pump

Hey guys. So i've had my water pump crap itself. Went to VW and was quoted $900 just for the part, which is steep. Tried to find a non genuine part, problem is everywhere is showing a different part. Supercheap auto and repco websites have like 3 different pumps, and i don't know which one it actually is. Anyone have any suggestions?

Car is a 2012 VW Polo GTI 1.4TSI

Yeah I wouldnt go to Repco or Supercheap for anything like this unless you have a super common car like a Camry or Falcon etc.

RunAutoParts is where I get a lot of my parts and filter etc and they only deal with European car parts. They are saying this is the part # for a 2012 Polo GTI 1.4 water pump.

Legend, thanks mate. I just purchased it for $350 off there, $550 cheaper than VW

Better in your pocket than VW's pocket.

          Good to know!

Did you replace the pump by yourself?
          How did you go?
Do you need a torque wrench to put it back?

          How did you go?

          Thank you

I did the pump on our Gti, got a Quinton Hazel replacement from Mick's Auto Parts in Ireland for $310
It's a pain in the arse job to do. Numerous pipes, belts, covers and even an engine mount needs to be removed.
You don't need a torque wrench, but you need a combination of:
            Jack
            Axle stands
            Phillips screwdriver
            Metric socket set
            Torx set
            Double inhex set
Vagcom cable to relearn the clutch on the pump pulley.

It's a job best done by someone else.

Thank you for your detailed response.
Yes, I agree it looks like a job best done by someone else!

I found a YouTube showing some of the process, not very good but it shows the steps: VW Polo water pump and thermostat housing replacement - VOLKSWAGEN - YouTube

What is the "Vagcom cable to relearn the clutch on the pump pulley" for? The video seems to just tension the belt with torque wrench. A bit of a guess as they don't actually show any detail.

Still undecided on how I will go. The local VW "stealership" quoted $1,050 all included.
Pump itself from OEM is around $220.

I already bought a VW G13 coolant (~$50!!) to top up now and then.
Maybe I will just keep a watchful eye and refill as needed ... and procrastinate on what to do !!

              Thank you again.
