Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 140 tri passat questions

    Just question:
Is 2016-17 passat tdi models affected by emissions software or this done by factory now?

Currently have b7 (no new software installed) which switched from b6 (no new software installed).

What is difference in driving between b7 and b8?

Is worth to change at all?

Could you please provide your opinions?
    Thanks

Here you can get info straight from the horses mouth; https://au.volkswagen.com.au/emission

Enter VIN to see if your vehicle is affected...

As for EA288 Diesel Engine Family (B8 Passat), it is not affected by any voluntary recalls.

I have owned 125KW / 130KW in the past also, the 140KW is just a natural progression - not an evolution...

I know my old b6 and b7 was involved in emissions scandal. I was thinking 140 tdi was upgraded edition with this issue solved.
      Thank you for your answer.

No recalls on the EA288. It’s not a ‘dieselgate’ affected engine.

As stated above, no emissions issues but 140KW TDI engine requires adblue additive for exhaust system which is topped up at service. Power increase from B7 125KW to B8 140KW is evident but not markedly so. Torque increase is more obvious with wheelspin an issue if accelerator floored on take-off. I changed my B7 for B8 and found cars fairly similar but B8 still wins out in style and comfort with marginally more room inside plus upgraded equipment.

Thank you for your opinions. Could you please tell how much km you can get from tank? 1200? More or less?

Range depends on driving. On the highway here in Tassie, I get around 1k km to a tank. When over in Vic on the flat roads around most of there, it gets even better. Around town, the range is less - 850km or so.
              Cheers

This is little bit surprise for me. I getting on b7 around 1100km (70% freeway, 30% city). On car sales all b8 diesel listed under 1300 km per tank?! Questionable...

Where do carsales get their figures from? Extrapolated from Gov't madated stickers whose numbers are from a dyno - not real world.

Vic is flat. Tassie is not.

Totally agree with you. In any case, b7 is very nice. B8 would be better option for me after couple months.

B8 also has a slightly smaller fuel tank than the B6/7 (65L vs 70L, I think), so that will make a difference to the range.
Having said that, I found my previous 2010 B6 gave slightly better consumption than my B8 Alltrack for the same driving conditions, but you also have to factor in that my Alltrack is AWD and has only clocked 11,000kms. I found my B6 really only started to loosen up after about 15,000 kms.

1100Kms in everyday use; better on long motorway runs.

After almost 30 year using vw (20 overseas and 10 years in Australia), I found very vw is great car with shi...ty support, overpriced Services and rude call support.
Now I am tossing between ford Mondeo titanium md wagon and vw wagon b8 tdi...[emoji848]...

I don't own a B8 TDI but when looking early 2016 I was really keen on one, based on how my wife's Golf 7 110 TDI drove. Was horrified by the lag on the 140 TDI Passat, my wife drove them too (we tried two different ones) and she agreed she couldn't live with the lag. Just something to look out for, perhaps they've ironed this out now, if so I may be in the market for a Passat Alltrack, currently prefer the Golf Alltrack 135 as no lag issues on that engine.

I was driving new passat b8 and no lag whatever (maybe just luck). Also, I was driving Mondeo titanium with full options with no lag as well. Price difference is huge. Still thinking about which car.
Petrol car is not option since I using car for work on field.
