Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Pre-purchase Car Inspections Recommendations- Sydney

    Hi all,

Wife and I saw a 2015 140tdi wagon that we like and want to put down a deposit but want to do a pre-purchase car inspection.

Does anyone know of any reputable mechanics that do this and specialise in VWs?

Can is based in Blacktown Sydney.

    TIA

Google car inspections or NSW motoring authority probably does it

Make sure its had services on time using correct oils and recalls done. Also ask if it has had the dreaded emissions recall done ( Hopefully Not)

If you are going to just use it for an around town hack on mainly short trips you are better off buying a petrol one.

I had a TDI for 8 years and only used it for trips where it got hot and stayed like that for a decent period. They dont like short cold running

B8 Passats were not subject to the emissions related recalls - they are a different generation of engine.

The NRMA does them and does them well. Comprehensive report and they always ring you to tell you the stuff they legally can't put in the report "i.e. don't do it Its a f**kin dud"

I have used NRMA for car inspections previously with no complaints, but some time ago when i was selling a car, the buyer organised for Stateroads to do an inspection at my place of work. I could see the car out my office window and it was very thorough - it impressed me as i was expecting it to be pretty basic.

I ended up with stateside and they seemed very thorough.

Only two major issues that need to be done is getting the battery replaced and both front and back rotors as well as pads need to be replaced.

At 95000 I was half expecting it.

I've been quoted 1400 for the rotors and pads. That seem reasonable? Is it cheaper for me to source the parts and then pay for labour?

VW will rape you for brakes. I would suggest buying from someone like Brakes Direct. You will need to provide them your VIN so they can see what fits and offer some options, but they will be a good portion cheaper than direct from VW. Im sure DBA will make some disks and then you will have various pads to choose from.

ATE disks and ATE ceramic pads are a popular choice (although not the cheapest) for replacement brakes and they are much less dusty than the VW parts.
