Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • A Blue R36 wagon added to our fleet.

    Hi All,
As I mentioned a few months ago in our newbie welcomepost.

I proposed the option of an R36 for my wifes next car over otherSUV's that she had in mind.
Great news ! once she laid eyeson one she was on-board ….
well – with the preferance of a blue wagon with sat nav/ camera, power tailgate and a sunroof
( mmm that won't be hard to find......if only !!!!!)

Anyway after seeing a few cars, we were very lucky enoughto get the opportunity to buy the following...

    2009 MY09Biscay Blue R36 wagon.
2 previous owners – originally fromBarlow world Melbourne, 2nd on the north shore of Sydney.

Only 45,750km – optioned with Sat nav and reverse camera andpower tailgate.
Pretty dark tinted windows and previous owner replaced side mirrorcovers with chrome ones....
(no sunroof – no blue tooth )

Sticker on a pillar door frame , along with conformation at localvw dealership – shows it has had a recall performed on themechatronic unit ( completed june 2010).

The car does have a few minor scratches and a worn bolster on thedrivers side, with the passanger one 'softening'. But overall hard tobeat for the low km's !

We purchased the car from a dealer in the north shore area (Sydney ).
We managed to view the car just the day after they traded it. Andupon further inspection on their behalf, it was found that the clutchpack needed replacement – his was all done by them under warrantybefore we took possesion of the car. ( estimated at around $2700performed by VW artarmon).

Since taking ownership it has been taken to the south coast, newcastle and port stephens.
After a couple of thousand kms out and about and around town - thecar is fantastic!.
Has plenty of room in the back, ( even ,managed to get a 'passat'tray liner off gumtree second hand)
As expected the fuel consumption is higher than our other car ('14 mazda 3 sp25 ), but the R36 is a gorgeous car to drive. Burblingalong in traffic quickly stepping through the gears to 6th,and once the road opens up a little touch of throttle has the hiddenside of these cars released.

The next upgrade is to get bluetooth sorted , so I know there area few out there that have done this upgrade and any guidance would begreatly appreciated.
I can't say i'm a fan of the chrome mirror covers, but my wifedoesn't mind them at all.

Also not that is of great bother, but is there a way to restorethe roof rails as they appear to have some water staining to theanodising.

Anyway thanks for reading our post and its great to be part of the'club' and the friendly and helpful members that are the backbone ofa great forum like this one.

    Thanks

    Congrats looks great!

As for the roof rails there is no way of removing the marks. I have used wd40 as it hides the marks and protects them.

Unless someone has a better suggestion?

Yeah, I have tried everything to no avail. Autosol, specialist aluminium cleaners, even gumption and a kitchen scourer! Nothing worked and nothing scratched, but alas, the water spots are all still there. Considering the shiny parts of the door chrome are where hands have been, I am assuming the body oils are protecting the chrome from corrosion and spotting, so I may have to try some sort of oil based wax as when I wash the car, the spots disappear when the rails are wet, making me think that wd40 and the like will "fill" in the rough bits and make them shine again?

I would buy a case of beer to whoever can come up with a viable solution for me as I've spent that much on products already with no result!

          Hi Alan and Lauren,

Good to see you posting here! Must have missed your introductory post though.

I know that you were a bit disappointed on missing out on a white MY10.5, but this low km Biscay Blue R36 wagon was a great find, pity about the sunroof though…J

Interesting about the history. The mechatronics were a known issue mainly on the MY08 models. The side bolsters we all know about!

Interesting that they replaced the clutchpack under warranty – that is usually a service item but not at 45,000km.

It is interesting that there are four R36 wagons in the European marque car club that Alan and I both belong to, though sadly one, who had owned his MY09 from new and had encouraged me by letting me drive his, passed away recently.

The R36 is a great car, very practical and very fast and probably a lot sportier than any Passat sold since unfortunately. Only the lifeless steering and firm jiggling ride disappoint.

I’m sure it won’t be too hard to return the side mirrors to Biscay Blue and I would recommend fitting the OEM VW 9W7 Bluetooth, which you can find on Ebay for $500. They should come with its own foam box and the correct location for it is under the driver’s seats – though installers usually don’t like running the wiring all the way to the floor and sometimes stuff it behind the RNS510 like they did on mine.

          Cheers, Paul

            Hi Paul,
Thanks for the post, Yes the Bluetooth is certainly the first upgrade to be done.
Sorry to hear about the key battery - you wouldn't believe the same thing happened the weekend after we picked up our car, get a phone call - wife in shopping centre carpark and ( second ) key won't open car ......... found 'key' inside key but had no idea how to get door handle cover off - managed to get in through tailgate and over the seats .......very ladylike i'm sure, needless to say both keys got a new battery !

My Blue R36 is almost identical age but a few more km. I don’t have the power tailgate or sunroof. Is the power tailgate an upgrade worth considering?

That's an interesting Audi - something that I didn't know. I wonder whether any 100 Coupé S were imported new into Australia? I think there may be a few privately imported ones here.
