Digital radio

Hey guys,
So I was in the states recently for a few weeks and I noticed that most new cars there have digital radio tuners. The other day I was playing with some settings in my RNS 510 and I see that there is a digital tuner section that says there isn't an aerial. Is it as simple as installing a digital aerial (plus coding etc) to pick up digital radio channels here in Aus or is that not available here down under?

There are dab units available but unless you retrofitted the rns unit I'd be doubtful you have one. What is the part number and software version?
Hold down setup until you get a different menu.

I tried that the other day. Didn't work for me. Not sure if that means that function isn't enabled for mine?

Not enabled them. You can enable it with vcds coding or by loading firmware 5238. At the initial load screen it will tell you what version you have. You can't downgrade without enabling it in development menu.

Hit radio to cycle through the bands, if dab doesn't show up then you don't have it. i retrofitted dab unit into passat no problem, i remember he part number should be 1t0 035 686 followed by a letter.

So I finally got round to doing the firmware update using your walk through. Worked perfectly thanks!
Anyway the model # is 1T0035680L
I'm guessing then there is no point in getting a DAB aerial?

Hold down the setup button until you get to the second hidden menu.
Check dab hardware version. If it's 255 then there is no dab tuner board.

Oh boo. That's exactly what it is. Oh well at least the firmware update is done. Some nice little improvements over what it was before. Thanks for the help.

not a dab model.. dab model will start with 1t0 035 686. i installed one into my passat

about 1200 + probably another $80 in antenna cable and adaptor. i never hooked the antenna up properly, ran out of time and it has been on todo list for over a year.

antenna cable is currently a stripped wire from a piece of cat5 jammed in the end of the antenna extension running up the pillar behind rear seats lol. works fine.

How much did that set you back?

But surely for optimal audio fidelity you need a gold plated unicorn dandruff encrusted $400 antenna??
