  • New Battery - now air bag light stays on

    Hey guy's

Factory battery in my R36 finally give up yesterday so and when I was trying to start it displayed on the screen was airbag fault.

I didn't think too much was wrong as I knew that my battery had been going for some time so I purchased a new Varta battery today put her in and car started first go but the only problem is now the air bag light stays on telling me air bag fault.

Coincidence that this just happens when the battery died or has the flat battery triggered a error that needs to be reset..

    Any advice appreciated...

Correct me if i'm wrong, I think driving it a little would clear the light. I could not remember if this happened when I replaced my battery. I did remember having one error light up but after driving a while on my way home noticed the light just disappeared.
If you got VCDS, you could clear the faults that existed after changing the battery.

Yeah I don't have VCDS unfortunately so maybe I'll try driving it which I actually haven't done yet.

Did see some airbag reset tools on ebay for $31 but for a one time use I'm not keen but then again I may have no choice as the VW Stealership will probably charge a packet to have that rectified...

Itd just be a low voltage code.

It'll need to be cleared with a scan tool.

As said... had this with our NBC... its my understanding that the airbags will still operate in a crash but the system had detected a low voltage when the battery was changed and that is the error.

Where are you located? I'm in Kilsyth if you're nearby and want to drop by I can clear the code for you (assuming that's all it is)

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

In disconnected my battery to charge it. When I reconnected, the airbag light was on. I read somewhere that driving a very short distance at 15-20 km/h with the steering wheel straight will fix it. I tried it and it worked. Light went off.

I purchased the reset tool off ebay for $30 and plugged it in.

Came up with the error code and cleared it.

                  All good... thanks guys

                    Hey Heinrich,
Which reset tool did you purchase from ebay? The air bag light of my wife's MK5 GTI comes on yesterday. Not sure if it has anything to do with a new battery which was installed 3 weeks ago.

Whereabouts are you in Victoria? Any chance to have the air bag light reset?

                    Cheers,

I have an OBDII scan and reset tool - in Kew or Richmond if that helps at all. Welcome to try...
