  • R36 DSG question from Canada... eh.

Hey guys! New guy from Vancouver BC here. I'm the proud owner of a very low Km (121,000) 2007 Passat 3.6 4Motion Wagon. As I'm sure you're aware we never got the R36 here in North America so I'm slowly building my way there.
Just recently finished an R36 DSG trans swap (along with a complete suspension rebuild/upgrade and air ride) that I bought from a wrecker in Adelaide to get rid of my failing 09M slushbox automatic that was in it. It runs and drives amazing 🤘

Question though: the DSG in S mode holds gears very long. Like 3rd/4th gear in the city cruising will hold up to 4000 rpm with little to no throttle before it shifts, once it does it shifts back down again if I even think about hitting the throttle. 4000 rpm cruising seems awfully high for a factory "Sport" option. I'm not complaining but the difference between the characteristics of my old 09M in S mode and the DSG is mind blowing. If I didn't know any better I'd guess that this trans was flashed at some point but maybe I'm wrong?

Any R36 owners care to enlighten me?

    Cheers!
    -Mike

I suspect the issue is the ECU sw is not correctly setup for DSG trans.
There is a lot of data interchange between the two to allow for correct shifts, 'farts' on shift due to engine retard etc.
Would look to get your ECU sw flashed to an R36 version and make sure it's coded for DSG6 rather than auto trans.

Thanks Kamold! I'm actually glad you replied. One of the many reasons I joined this forum was to pick your brain on your headlight mods but I'll save that for another post.

The ECU has been flashed by HPA Motorsports who is a Canadian dealer for TVS Engineering out of the Netherlands. To my knowledge they're the only tuner that offers any sort of tuning support for the 3.6/DSG combo. I know HPA doesn't have a house tune for the 3.6 and whoever they got the file from is out of their time zone so I'm assuming it's TVS's file.

Having said all that, my MFA (which is still the stock early red-face NA version) reads what gear the car is in when in D or S. I don't think that's stock because my old auto-tragic trans didn't have that. Does the R36 do that stock?

I'm beginning to wonder if the ECU tune I got from HPA had some form of DSG software embedded because this car shifts lightning fast (it's totally bonkers in S or manual) and in manual there's no more auto kick down/up like it had with the auto. I know this because the first time I drove it with the DSG I accidentally put it in manual going around a corner and bounced it off the rev limiter a few times 🤦

Sorry for the novel 🤣 Just trying to get my bearings and sort this thing out.

Please post the sw version number.
The shifts are done by the TCU.
Cluster displays the gear it's in as sent by the TCU. ECU has nothing to do with it.
        Hence my questions.

Post your scan sections for the engine and transmission.

And Advance ID too, if you can, Ross-Tech: VCDS Tour - Advanced ID

To make it neat, put it in between the code tags.

Ok I will get on that sooner than later. Thanks for the heads up guys 👍
Considering I didn't even know what a Canbus network was a year ago and managed to pull off a full DSG swap (among other things) on my wagon there's still some hope I'll figure out this forum format and VCDS at some point 🤣 The light is dim but it's on 😎
