Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Water in footwell

The floor mat and the carpet under the floor mat in the driver's footwell is quite wet and I'm looking for possible causes. The car has no sunroof, the windscreen has never been replaced and does not seem to be leaking, there is no loss of coolant that would suggest a leaking heater core and there is no evidence of water running down the plastic cover over the firewall.

Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas? Is there drain that is prone to blocking?

Check for leaves and other dirt and debris blocking the drains under your plastic windscreen cowl. If that water cant drain away it could get into the cabin.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I try pouring water down the drain at the side and if it doesn't flow freely, I'll resort to a hose to blast out any debris (whilst checking for water ingress at the same time!).

Lucas_R you were absolutely correct. I poured water into the edge of the plenum between the plastic cover and the bonnet hinge. Water ran from a retaining screw in the firewall into the footwell. Problem solved! Thanks.

I've got a simialr problem but the passenger footwell. Are you able to take a photo of what I should be looking at (the plenum and the retaining screw)?
            Thanks

Sorry for the delay. I haven't logged on for a while. Here are photos of the plenum. Retaining screw photo to follow later. The wiring harness passes through a hole towards the outside of the car. Since the harness fills most of the diameter of the hole, it's easily blocked.
