Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

How cool is that, 2 R36 owners owned an AU XR8 I still have mine, deciding whether to keep it or sell it. Thinking I may make it my project car, its just the room I don't have that might kill that idea

Still haven't put my Bluetooth in yet, I may get it done today or tomorrow. Been looking at Ross Tech cables, a Sydney distributor has the 10 VIN version for $480, about the same as I could get one from the US. They are out of stock of the 3 VIN versions Just have to convince my wife it is a good idea.....

So its been a while and nothing done to the R36, just don't have a lot of time. Last weekend I tried to install my bluetooth and yet again ran out of time. However, I found the car has a microphone installed and that is connected to the RNS510. When I install the piggyback cable it does not have the matching wiring to take the installed microphone to the unit but has a plug for the microphone and lead I got with the kit.

What would the one in the car be for? If I disconnect/replace that with the kit microphone, what will I lose? The star on my steering wheel just mutes the unit, as does the phone button without the 9w7 installed. Any info would be appreciated on what to do next.

This weekend I will attempt to fully install the bluetooth..... depending on weather of course.

      Cheers

The one in the car would be for voice control of the RNS.
However if the RNS and steering wheel aren't correctly coded for voice control then the star button will just mute.

So your existing mic should be connected to the mic in pins on the RNS. Then your bluetooth unit's mic pins should be connected to the mic out pins on the RNS. That way you can get both voice control on the RNS and microphone for the bluetooth module.

          Hi kamold

Thanks for the reply. Worked out the star, language was wrong. Changed that and it came alive.

Looks like I'll need to find some pins and sockets to fit the plugs so i can route the current mic wires through the piggyback. I'll go visit Jaycar tomorrow to see what they have.

          Cheers

Long time between posting, the ole girl is still ticking along nicely. Haven't had time to do anything to it since the bluetooth install however.

With regard to bluetooth, how do you stop the RNS510 switching to bluetooth whenever something happens with the phone? On the wifes 206 TSI nothing happens until you tell it to, on mine every little touch on my phone will switch the radio to bluetooth. Along with that I get no track information when actually using it, is it supposed to do that?

I am sure I missed some coding when I originally installed the unit but I can't seem to locate any concrete information on a full set of settings. Anyone have any insights?

            Cheers

What firmware version is on the rns?
              Probably needs updating to 5238.
Will also require map update if you do update firmware.

Also don't touch your phone while driving. That should fix it

Not sure if there is a setting which might change the behavior. Maybe bt autoplay?

Hit me up if you need any assistance.

                Thanks Kamold

To be honest, no idea of the firmware version on the RNS, will look up how to see that. If it needs updating I will seek out a map update, thought they were a little old

I am a good citizen, don't touch my phone while driving... much. Any messages or anything else seems to trigger the change to bluetooth, even pocket dialing

Thanks for your offer, I'll exhaust all my knowledge before coming to you for help.

                Cheers

Mine used to have the same BT switching issue. The only way I found to solve it was to have my phone only connected for calls not audio. This has to be set on your phone. Obviously this means you can't play music but mine doesn't do that properly anyway...

Hmmm, interesting. Thanks Domatron, I use mine for music now and again so need it connected that way. After looking at the price of the latest maps I am thinking about biting the bullet and changing to a Discover Media or Discover Pro system instead to modernise things. The budget would take a hit but I don't plan on selling mine for many years.

On another note I actually installed my DRL's today, simple actually if you know how or cheat and use something like the following thread VW Passat R36 DRL Installation Video - Aliexpress DRL Thanks Toine888.

One thing I haven't done yet is connect up the dimming line. I read you can connect them by piggy baking onto the headlight/parker wiring but not sure which sire to connect to. Can anyone clarify exactly which wire to tap on to?

More to come, just ordered my LED parker bulbs, looking at doing the headlights, puddle lights and replacing the mirror indicators after seeing Kamold's thread. The bug has bitten

                    Cheers

My RNS is on the way out. When it dies I think I'll also do the Discover upgrade.

Have you tried putting the phone on silent when in the car? Slightly annoying but audio and calls should both still work...

Pin 6 in the 14 pin connector, yellow with black trace of the headlight connector harness is the head light wire you can tap into.
It's the thicker of the 2 yellow with black wires.

Dinner wire to there will have drl dim when headlights are on.
