Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

W8 local? The only one I've ever seen is a grey one in Canberra.

Disgustingly quick for a car that looks like your mum should be driving it and I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Is it advertised anywhere? If you do buy it you have to let me come and have a close look.

    Cheers

I'm not sure that I agree with the comment earlier in this thread that a Passat W8 is disgustingly quick. In fact, by today's standards it's relatively slow. If I've got my facts straight, it develops 202kW with 370Nm of torque for a car with a kerb weight of 1,665kg. That's 121 kW/Tonne (W/kg).

By comparison, a Passat B6 3.2L VR6 has 114 kW/Tonne and the R36 has 131 kW/Tonne. So I'd expect it to be slower than the R36 which has an engine with 220kW and 350Nm. I was thinking that the extra torque of the W8 would be nice, but the extra 20Nm is insignificant.

To put things into perspective, a Holden Commodore VE SS with a 6.0L V8 has 270kW and 530Nm for 143 kW/Tonne. I might agree that M3s and C63s are very quick with 192 kW/Tonne. "Disgustingly quick" I might reserve for a Ferrari 488 GTB with 334 kW/Tonne.

Having said all that, the Passat W8 could be a very good car to own. It sounds like a bargain for what you get. There are YouTube clips which show off a great engine note. A decent balance in the bank account might be needed if things go wrong.

To add to that perspective, power to weight is not everything either. The R36 is quicker than the VE SS (And I believe the VF SS by extension as the VF is not any faster) both from 0-100 and from personal experience (On track of course) beyond that as well. Although I agree the W8 would not be R36 speed, the R36 was maxed out and designed to be fast, it is a sports car, where the W8 is not. I think, for what it is, it's quite fast. Disgustingly so, definitely not, but it is a fast car for its class.

I think what he was trying to say is that it's a sleeper...he wasn't trying to say it's the fastest car out there, but considering how it looks, it will surprise a few people.

I enquired about one recently but it sold pretty quick. Would really like one, but if anything went wrong, you'll be taking out a second mortgage for replacement parts.

What I meant was if you saw this at the lights there's no way you would expect it to be as quick as it is, especially when most Passats are 1.8.

I would have bought that one on e-bay, but I found out about it too late, enquired on it, but he said it had already sold ! A piece of motoring engineering history I think.
