3M Scotchgard protective film

Hey guy's ,

Just curious of people's opinion's on the clear 3M film to protect your paint work.

I have just obtained a quote from a well known specialist who applies this film and was wondering if it's worth the
cost $$

He told me it comes with a 5 year warranty and I'd hope it would for the price.

Has anyone on here had it applied to their car ?

Opinion's ,For's and Against's appreciated.

I have it on the door sills and rear bumper of both cars. Been on for nearly 3 years and as long as you apply the cleaner bimonthly it stays OK

Only one nick in mine on the bumper

I bought it from Ozishield in Melbourne and did it myself At present I have about 8ft of it which I bought in USA and havent used it.

Isnt too hard to apply to single plane surfaces like the door sills but the curves of the bumper are a bit harder.

Took me most of a day to do them but did b inlaws Navara sills in about 2 hours used about $20 worth of film for the four sills

Ozishield sell bra kits for quite a few cars IE my Passat full kit is $495 and $880 installed

Thank's for all that info.

That does sound a bit cheaper than what I have been quoted so I might get in touch with this Ozi shield place.

May be cheaper to have a go myself but then again the front bumper could be a killer to do.

Personally I would get it done Its not as easy as it perhaps looks I was going to get the kit but car got a couple of chips on the bonnet so didnt bother The bumper and the mirrors would be quite a job.

You need a bottle of water with dishwash in it a bottle with a solution of isopropyl alcohol and a squeegee you can get off Ozishield

If you are near Melbourne I would talk to them about getting it done.

I started on a friends rear bumper and when I had to pull it off a bit the paint came with it. Was a brand new week old car and had been resprayed.
Ended up not doing it after dealer fixed it.

After a while the film would still have swirl marks on it right?

We had our mk6 GTD done when we first got it new they did all of the front bumper front gards bonnet front of mirrors door sills top of rear bumper almost 5 years ago. Still looks great. All panels were lazer cut on site &took about4 hours & I would do it again on a new car. 100000ks & no stone chips.

I would have got mine done BUT as I got a stone chip on the way home from the dealer the day I bought it i didnt bother

I had my Octy done when I first got it.

Got the whole front area (partial bonnet) and mirrors, rear load area.
Still going strong after 4 years, only noticeable when the car is dirty.

Agree that its best left to professionals unless you are already a dab hand at installing something like window tinting film.

I'd recommend it.

Agree with bisy & Kamold's views above.

Had a 'front kit' applied to bumper, front half of bonnet, front of guards, headlights/foglights and side mirrors on CW Golf 6 about 4 years ago, and no paint chips/damage so far. Cost was about $800 from Complete Surface Systems at Brookvale, Sydney. I watched two experienced fitters applying a single piece to entire front bumper, and it certainly appeared to be a bit of a challenge - DIY probably not the best idea.

Some very small marks in the plastic where stones have bounced off, but not too obvious. Film has yellowed very slightly, but again not too obvious in normal daylight - any other colour than CW probably would not show this effect. Also doesn't seem to have any particularly noticeable swirl marks, but always hand washed with average care. Car is generally garaged during the day, so UV exposure not severe.

Care instructions say to keep film clean & sealed with a good quality wax or sealer, as used for normal paintwork. Insect 'splatter' will cause dull patches if wax/sealant not used regularly, or left very long before cleaning. Apparently, new film durability has improved a bit more over past year or two.

I'd have it done again on a new car, but up front cost is not cheap.

I have Xpel Ultimate on most of the A45 and I thoroughly recommend it. I've seen some (older) 3M stuff yellow after a while, but I'm not sure if the new generation does.

There's absolutely no maintenance for the Xpel. I don't have it on the R36 but the RS3 will get it all over.
