Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Memory seats - having a hard time setting it up, help please gurus!

    Hi guys

So just acquired a 2010 R36 and going through the manual trying to get up the memory seats
However no having much luck programming it into the remote control key

I follow the manual, but the last step where i remove the key, wait 3 seconds and press the unlock button, I am expecting to hear a gong to signal that its set, but I can never get that gong happening. Are you able to help walk me through it?

Secondly, how is the memory seat supposed to work if coded to a key?
Does it automatically set to the preset seat setting when you unlock the car with the key?

    Thanks all!

Yes it does recognise the key. I just followed the manual to set mine and as Im the only driver they stay the same unless I bump the control

To set my key it says to hold the memory button you set the seat up to (1)? , down and within 10 secs press the unlock button on the key A gong will sound.

Sorry about the delayed reply, I know you PMed me a few days ago, but I've been too busy with work.

It has been a while since I've tinkered with these settings, as I'm the only one who drives my car too. Whenever I take my car in for a service, I always give the service centre the spare key. Occasionally I see the seat move back into position when I go to pick up my car, but only if I'm paying attention.

The instructions in the manual can be a bit ambiguous - here's a video of someone demonstrating how to assign a seat position to a key.

Firstly, have you tested whether you can actually set seat position memories? There's a reset procedure in the manual if you can't - adjust the seatback angle as far forward as you can. Let go of the switch, then press it forwards again until you hear a gong. This clears all the seat position memories.

My suggestion would be to follow the steps in the manual again exactly, without skipping any steps. I'd also do it with all the doors shut. When it says 'turn on the ignition', you don't actually need to start your car - just push the key in far enough for all the warning lights to come on.
      1. Press and hold the memory button to be assigned. Release when the seat/mirrors have moved to their preset location.
      2. Insert the key into the ignition and push it in far enough for all the warning lights to come on. There's no need to start the engine.
      3. Adjust the seat and mirrors to where you want them to be, if they aren't already in position.
      4. Press the 'Set' button on the seat controls
      5. Press the memory button again, and listen for the 'ding'.
      6. Pull the key out of the ignition.
      7. Wait 3-5 seconds, then press the 'unlock' button on the key, and listen for the 'ding'.

To the best of my recollection, these were the steps I took to assign the seat memory to my key.

Secondly, how is the memory seat supposed to work if coded to a key? Does it automatically set to the preset seat setting when you unlock the car with the key?
Correct. The video I linked to above shows you exactly what happens when the seat is out of position when you unlock your car.
