Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • outer cv boot replacement- quick boot?

Has anyone had any success with replacing the outer CV boot with a universal quick boot like this one:

'oops, wrong link, see post below'

A mate has given me one (since he sold his Passat) and I was going to give it a try before a long 4hr trip (to Bright). I only have a small split at the moment with a few splatters of grease and no noise in the joint. I dont want to put this new boot on only to have it fall off out on the road.

    Cheers, Dewy.

Whoops, I put in the wrong link. I meant to put in this one:

Volkswagen Passat Sharan Universal Split CV Boot Gaiter Driveshaft Joint Sticky | eBay

which is the type with a seam, so you dont have to pull the axle.

I know very little about the CV joint boot replacement, but all the little bit I know says that is not a good option. Whats to prevent it from leaking or tearing at the seam. How are you goin to close the seam anyway?? I dont think the glue will last long.
