What is that big grill on top of dash in Passat B6

Hi,
Just wondering what that big grill in the middle of the dash on top is? It seems to have a rectangular shaped nob sitting on top.

Is the return for the air con I think and the nob could be the auto headlight or aircon temp sensor. (Cant remember which) B7 is the same
