R36 with Haldex Auto Hold and ESP Problem

  • R36 with Haldex Auto Hold and ESP Problem

    Hi everyone,

    I'm loving my R36 which i bought second hand. It now has about 107kms on the clock.

    However, the car has developed a problem that i've searched on forums, but not found a direct match. Basically, one day (at the same time) the ESP light came on and auto hold brake stopped working. Neither can now be switched on using the buttons and neither light up. Ive checked all of the fuses at the sides of the dash and they're OK .


    I also noticed that naturally the front wheels span, particularly the fronts and put that down to the traction control being off, but as i understand this also can indicate the haldex system isnt working.


    I had a local mechanic run a diagnostic and an error code came up for the haldex controller, but I wonder why the brake doesn't work? Is this all interconnected?


    Any insights greatly appreciated!

    You would be surprised how it's all interconnected. If there's a fault code, clearing it might bring it back to life but that depends on what the fault is.

    if you can get the exact code and google it, you'll get better informed. I'd recommend using VCDS too rather than a generic scanner.

      Thanks for your response. Code is J492. There is info on Google to say that it's the haldex controller but that the code could result in something else going wrong and kind of tripping it.....

        J492 is the box with the problem not the code. I pulled this one off a uk forum. This is the information that you would get from a VCDS scan.

        Giving you a better idea of what could be wrong.

          So I spoke to a really helpful guy at APR in QLD who are haldex upgrade experts and he said it is very unlikely it would be haldex controller as they rarely fail, it is more likely something else in the chain. So armed with that I did some more head scratching and found that a mini fuse was missing from the far left of the drivers side fuse box. Whilst I had checked all of the fuses to try and diagnose a short circuit on the side of the road recently, I must have put one back in the wrong spot! Transplanted a fuse and hey presto we're in business!!

          Bloody stoked I didn't have to fork out any more money, apart for a 10amp fuse.

          I now know a lot more about haldex which is a positive!
