  • Passat B7 dash rattle/squeak fix

Prior to buying a Passat I read reviews where author(s) complained of dash rattles or squeaking & when I drove for the first time I too noticed this annoying sound emanating from the dash when I ran over a bump. I figured it was an easy fix after noticing it was the faux brushed aluminium insert.

After 4 months of ownership I got tired of this annoying sound & it finally got the better of me so a couple of days ago I fixed it.

As I have owned several 4wd's & actually used them for their intended purpose I became good at resolving annoying rattles & squeaks from interior trims. I have pulled many car interiors apart to resolve unwanted sounds & also to quieten/reduce road & engine noise.

Let's face it plastic against plastic or plastic against metal will rub unless something is placed to separate as well provide absorption of vibration. Outback coarse bitumen or dirt roads will test any car or simply a drive to the local shops on our crappy roads – especially NSW. My tried & well tested favourite is felt. Years ago I bought a 1mtr piece of black felt from Spotlight which provided several cars with rattle & squeak free motoring that should have been resolved in development & production prior to being unloaded onto the public.

I did notice some screws missing from the binnacle housing as they were not fixed in production. Hhhmmm......not happy Mr VW I have no doubt this would have contributed to the rattle/squeak.

Firstly the fascia needs to be removed. I found this great video which guided me, although from a CC it's the same. I have added a little bit on the 2nd link showing how to remove the surround from the binnacle where Matt removed with his fingers I used the tool.

I fixed mine by putting a piece of foam down the bottom of the drivers side glovebox between the two hinges.

It rattled away on rough seal and I spent hours trying all sorts of remedies.

Finally tried this and it has worked so far.

Excellent Some of the roads around where I am are really chopped up due to roadworks & not a bit of noise has occurred, it works a treat.

How would one get his hands on the removal tool?

Jaycar also sell a trim removal kit. I got one from there about 6 months ago. Good quality and they work well. $25 if i remember correctly and comes with 3 or 4 different tools.

Thanks. Tools are available as mentioned by Sylvester & Lucas_R & will save any possible damage to trim. Post to let us know if works.
