  • Repairing a B5

    Hi There.
Can anyone give me some direction on what I might require to fix this and where to find it?
It has been insurance written off as repairable and I have been offered a pretty low salvage value.
    Cheers

    Did the airbags pop?

Has the fan hub hit the back of the radiator?

Get on Ebay, etc and find a whole one the same colour with a busted transmission (common). Grab the bits you need, and part out/scrap the rest. They come apart pretty easy, so it wouldn't take more than a day to sort out.

I know Volkspares near Canberra have a parts car but that's a long way from you.

        Thanks for the tip.

I had a look at it at the shop today. Couldn't pop the bonnet because the release was buggered.
The front intrusion bar is pushed into the Cond, but I could not see the Rad. Local wrecker has both those items.

It has turned out quite good.
          Front Bar and intrusion bar
          Rad and Cond
LHS HL and Indicator and support
          Bonnet
That's about it. Bags didn't pop, rad support OK

I do need to ask, what else should I be doing while the radiator is out?

I'm thinking Timing belt and tensioner (and possibly water pump.) Where to buy?
Anything else while I have this great access to the front?

Well I took the opportunity to do:
            Serpentine Belt
            Timing Belt and tensioner
            Accessory Belt
            Water Pump
Replace leaky window washer pump and grommet.

Just need the Safety Cert, A/C re-gas and go to WOVI. (Installed the indicators after pic was taken.)

I also noticed that the wiring looms internal to the headlights have a terrible tendency to crack and lose their insulation. One of my original headlights and two of the wrecker's ones had that. I got two other headlights from the wreckers and found enough looms to get them replaced with decent ones.Click image for larger version

            Also, note the headlights!
Used a Turtle Wax product for headlight restoration. WOW. We'll see how long the effect lasts.
