  • 1998 Passat V6 hard to start, no power wont accelerate

    Okay after weeks of messing around i managed to get to this stage after posting this


    1998 V6 auto passat- Bought the car off someone who said it hadn't been running for 1-2 years.

    It takes about 10 or more seconds of cranking before it will fire. It then idles fine.
    If you try and rev it, it goes to stall, if you quickly pump the throttle the revs slowly increase and i can get them upto about 3000rpm
    If you put your foot to the floor it goes to stall.

    I can hear the fuel pump running (Slightly grizzly in my oppion)
    I have replaced the fuel filter
    I have changed the spark plugs, from Bosch +4 to the NGK ones
    I have cleaned the throttle body, and done and adapted the throttle with my Ross tech cable
    No fault codes in the engine ecu

    I have put a jerry can of BP 98 in it with 3 bottles of penrite injector cleaner, which is currently sitting outside idling...

    When i was changing out the spark plugs, one of the spark plugs leads had a little cut on the bit that goes into the spark plug hole, with a little bit a what looks like white arking, so ill get new ones of those...

    Just done an A4 that was as hard as this to start, fuel tank sucked in due to charcoal canister being full of mud, no fuel coming out of return when idling, due to fuel pump being sucked into the tank floor. I would be checking your fuel pressure as a bare minimum in your diagnostic check list
    I don't see fuel pressure tested on your list there. See how you go

      Thank you for replying.
      Yeh it does seem like a fuel pressure problem, say blocked injectors, or not enough pressure to the injectors.

      I turned the pump on while i was doing the new fuel filter and fuel came out.
      Ive got the injector cleaner in there to try and clean the system, but maybe the injectors have just had it or the regulator.

      Is there any way i can test the fuel pressure or injectors with my ross tech cable.
      Or do i need a fuel rail pressure tester?
