Hi all,

Just thought I would start a thread to share my experience of installing the supersprint cat-back exhaust to my R36.

I have just had my supersprint cat back installed (sport / racing centre muffler) and all I can say is wow. It's exactly what I wanted - not too loud - no drone. It really brings out the richness of the R36 note - and has a really nice low burble that extends up to about 3000rpm. Post 3000rpm it begins to become a bit throatier and really roars. The funny thing is though - at idle it is very hard to tell the difference between supersprint and stock.

I like the look of the exhaust on the car as well - I wasn't sure about the oval tips but once I saw them in the flesh I was very pleased. The engraving on the tips are a favourite as well.

As for performance - long story short - nothing has really changed. But I did not do this exhaust for that reason. The reason I did the exhaust was to unleash the fantastic exhaust note that was hiding. The 3.6L has a very different note to that of the 3.2L in R32. Where the R32 has a raspy note that seems to scream - the R36 is more subtle, with a fantastic low burble to the exhaust. One thing of interest is that the car does seem a lot "free-er" or less restrictive in the upper rev ranges.

The photos below show the stock exhaust as compared to the supersprint both on and off the car. It was great seeing the two systems side by side - you really understand how cumbersome the stock system is. An interesting fact is that the supersprint system is about half the weight of the factory system.

Overall I am really pleased and would recommend to others. Yes it is more expensive - but if you are looking for a great tone from the exhaust I think it’s a great option. In my opinion, the R36 from stock should have sounded like this.

Nice write up Adam, definitely agree that VW should have manned up and released the R36 like this from factory. How does it sound from within the car, is it as nice or more muted than the you tube clip suggests?

I have definitely noticed a change from within the car (I wasn't sure what to expect as the R36 has a lot of sound insulation). I remember the stock system was very quiet until you got into the higher rev range. The supersprint makes it a little louder inside in the upper rev range - but the big change is the low rev range - 1200 to 3000 rpm. There is marked increase in the sound level - and as I mentioned before, it's a nice low burble that is quite intoxicating. It took a few friends a little while (after getting in the car) to realise that I had changed the exhaust. They said they had noticed a change in volume / tone - but weren't 100% sure if an after market system had been fitted.

Thanks for the write up, this sounds like what I'm looking for. I also like your comment about the sound being only marginally more noticeable with moderate driving, that way I can keep my wife happy as she thought my Golf R was loud (and that was stock) Well better start saving the pennies

I'm thinking something similar too - finding a decent exhaust shop in Perth and working with them to get something made will be significantly less!

I had considered / researched that exact option for mine. I was tempted because its about $1200 cheaper however in the end decided against it. The Hi-tech system is a system that is designed to fit the R36 - the supersprint is engineered for the R36. Supersprint do rigorous testing to ensure the system works brilliantly with the car - and importantly - that there is no drone or power loss. I can only testify to say this is true in my experience.

My firm view is that as with anything in life - you get what you pay for...hence why we have VW R36's not Toyota's.

I am not trying to say the Hi-tech system isn't good...but I don't think it's a fair comparison to the supersprint.

Well, I'd beg to differ, but each to their own I guess.

The guys at Hi-Tech Mufflers have done quite a number of R36's very successfully over a number years and they also have a comprehensive development department. They will very quietly tell you, only if provoked, of the substantial number of exotic European exhaust systems that they've modified/fixed over the years. Drone issues in particular... These are points they don't brag about, but they will tell you about, only if asked.

I'd suggest that if you're still in doubt, maybe you could contact them and ask for the contact details of a few of their more than satisfied R36 clients, discuss the points you raise with these end-users, I think you might be surprised at their responses...

The same SuperSprint system is around $3k, and I would put a significant amount of money on saying that it is in no way any better than the Hi-Tech Muffler system.

Just because its made in Italy/Germany/Austria doesn't make it any better, it just makes it considerably more expensive, thats all!. The cost of freight from Europe is massive these days, and an exhaust system wouldn't travel well either - they're an awkward shape, long, heavy and just not freight friendly. The guys from Hi-Tech Mufflers will make/reproduce any exhaust system on the available market, out of any exotic materials you would care to choose from, and at at least 40% cheaper than the original versions.

And, if/when you have problems/issues with it, the man that actually made it can be talked too - directly.

And as a final, if not, often overstated point, they are Australian made, and thats good for us all...

And as for a fair comparison, I agree, it wouldn't be fair at all, the HTM system is way better, and considerably cheaper!

I'd also agree with you on your point of getting what you pay for, well, you sometimes get what you pay for, but you never get what you don't pay for!

Appreciate the reply. Obviously you are quite sold on the idea of a HTM system – and that’s great – you always have to be happy / confident in your decisions.

Yes I am aware of your points about HTM – as I said I researched into the option myself. After seeing / hearing an exhaust on an R36 they had done it just wasn’t what I was looking for. Without wanting to go too much into it (I don’t think it’s constructive) both myself and friends have had experiences with HTM on a range of cars – and the experiences have been mixed. A point to be careful of is that of course they would talk up the product / service they are offering – you would be worried if they didn’t.

I take your point about if and when issues / problems occur – but that is why it is important to spend time finding and building a relationship with an installer should you choose to go down the path of a non-Australian system. Touch wood I have not had any issues of yet – but if a friend’s R36 supersrpint is anything to go by – 3 years and no issues is not bad.

I am not sure I follow your point about being Australian made being good for us all….don’t you drive a German car?

As a final note of courtesy – I set this thread up (separate to other R36 threads) to share my experience of purchasing and owning a supersprint exhaust. I am more than happy to give my opinion of the system to anyone to help them in their thought process (to hear a real experience rather than sales / website jargon). I understand your interest in the HTM system – but the title of this thread is “.:R36 Supersprint Exhaust”….maybe another thread devoted to that system or a comparison would be better.

I'm not one to "hijack" threads and if you feel I have, then I apologise. I was merely commenting on the SS system as I understand it. I've done some research on this issue but I'm not an authority on the subject. I am only stating my humble opinion, no more... And of course I'm more than happy to learn more about this issue from an expert such as yourself.

With regards to me driving a German car, yes, this is true, but if the Australian car industry, such as it is, made a competitor that was every bit as good as the R36 then surely I would consider it. My point being that, in my opinion, which is overall meaningless, the HTM efforts are as good as the SS product.

So, I too am only trying to share my experiences such as you have... And I'm sorry if you've found my comments out of line with regards to "your" thread.

You'll hear no more from me on this subject...
