I'm going by reset MFD averages over time. They may be inaccurate as well but they tend to be optimistic

I'll do the fuelly thing as well.
It's a matter of choosing the correct tool, instrument or instrumentation for the job.

Instantaneous readings are there to indicate what's happening at any given time, which can be useful.

What isn't so useful, is trying to use it in order to predict an average over a certain period or distance.

Fill up at a certain pump until you can see the fuel in the pipe.
If this requires the user to fill past the first click, I would discourage that, unless the need for supreme accuracy overrides the allowance of expansion.

Most owner's manuals would state not to continue filling after the first (or second) cut off.

I do agree and only ever do it if I am going to use it immediately Not quite so bad on a diesel but petrol expands as you say hence the instruction not to do it. Used to do it in the Cruiser as some days every drop counted in the Outback.

Also when I had a taxi running on gas we used to bend the float to maximise a fill but we were immediately running it down.

Always did it at the start of a shift Never at the end.

the mfd averages are pretty indicative, if a bit optimistic, and running the tank down to 10km range then filling to the first click off is a decent tell on consumption over a tank as well.

when the mfd is telling me I have a range of 250km at 50% full (35l) I have no reason to doubt it really is drinking more than 12/100, and has been for some time..
