  • alltrack consumption

As people get into these perhaps this topic will get used.

Just some notes on my consumption observations on the MFD in the Alltrack 125kw. It is a bit of a different story to the FWD passat diesel.

The best I got on ~80kmh flat to undulating freeway traffic was 5.5/100 for a one hour trip

If I drive intercity at ~100kmh, without trying to save fuel it will be something like 6.3/100

If I drive intercity mostly either at 105kmh or 115kmh with cruise control the consumption ends up stuck around 7.0/100

Ridiculously high traffic short trips - very low average speed I'm talking 10kmh over an hour of driving over three hours of real time - with my wife driving with no time to care about anything but the kids: seeing 13.0/100 indicated (with stop/start on)

If the refuel message appears I can get maybe 61L in the tank.

Maximum indicated range ever saw: 1100km

The engine has 5000km at this point, so not run in. It might improve a bit from here I guess but I'm getting the general idea. Over 100kmh gets alarmingly fuel inefficient perhaps because the 6 speed box cruises at 2100 rpm @ 100kmh but starts to get up their in revs at higher speed. Short cold trips and extra transmission cogs are making shopping trip consumption feel a bit high but I'll see how range per tank pans out.

I've found almost identical figures in my Alltrack (125tdi) which currently has 2600kms.

Best average fuel figures I've seen is 5.2L/100kms on the drive back from the Blue Mountains.

I hope mine gets better. 1st tank city + 450km in country - 7.7l/100km. A little concerned given all the fuel saving measures - coasting, stop-start, economical gearing (ie. in 6th when doing 60).

I think it is the city, the city part of the consumption equation is bothering me.

Not really understanding what is going on. The car is a bit heavier than my last 2 liter petrol wagon, that is true, but it has the advantage of diesel, and stop/start.

Yet the "choked city" consumption when the average speed is dire so far (city as in 17kmh average speed, over 1 and a half hours, with random stops). haldex losses? or is the engine never really warming up. It isn't the higher riding factor, not at those speeds.

At the rate it is showing for just short trip urban we will get 450km from a fill up (of 65l). vs getting 400km from a tank of petrol (of 45l) using the 147kw golf GTI engine.

The MFD is showing 700-800km range, whereas the 08 Passat often showed 1000km at fill up. How the others are getting 5's is a mystery!

It's not so much that low speed that's killing the economy but the "moving the car from rest" and idling that bumps up the consumption.

Driving to Geelong from Melbourne at constant 100km/h I got 7.5L/100km in my V6

An increase of 9% in vehicle weight for the Passat Alltrack 130TDI DSG (1726 kg), partly due to the 4MOTION drivetrain and heavier crossmembers, combined with additional powertrain losses, bigger tyres, and increased ride height, all contribute to an average increase of 14% in fuel consumption (7.0/5.3/5.9) when compared to the Passat Wagon 130TDI DSG (1580 kg, 6.2/4.6/5.2).

In essence, it's a very heavy car - which is reflected at the pump. Technology can only do so much to overcome physics and 1.7 tonnes.

You can have a look here for some data. Yes, it's German but I've already narrowed down the searchh parameters for Alltrack and most of the data is numbers and icons. The Alltrack definitely uses more petrol/diesel than your normal, lighter, lower-to-the-ground, 2WD, (and in Germany frequently manual) Passat wagon. Apparently there's a wide distribution - in some cases it's notably high consumption, which is leading to a fair bit of grumbling. That said, not all vehicles have yet been run in beyond 10K km, are flogged on the Autobahn and other factors.

weight doesn't explain the urban consumption i see (so far). I had two months in an ml350 with over 2000kg and a v6 diesel and 4matic, bigger tires higher riding etc and it was hovering at about 11 for slow city short trip pattern, and on interstate it could average 5.5 in motion, or 7 for an entire 500km trip.

the country consumption increase I am ok with, it's what mine is doing with gently driven short trips is puzzling. If it drinks like a diesel grand cherokee on school runs I would have picked a Laredo.

Work out how much fuel the car has actually used (i.e. litres at the pump / distance travelled x 100 = average fuel consumption).

Instantaneous fuel consumption read outs are not necessarily helpful in predicting what the average will be.

                        yeah instant is useless,
I'm going by reset MFD averages over time. They may be inaccurate as well but they tend to be optimistic

I'll do the fuelly thing as well.

The MFD is notoriously understating consumption - by 5-10% according to some posts. Owners have been known to take them to a dealer and have the display adjusted. Which is apparently possible, but I've never read about how to do that in VCDS or such.

I'll say it again Fill up at a certain pump until you can see the fuel in the pipe. Go for a drive however far you want.

Come back to the same pump and with the same load in the car Fill it to the same level divide the fuel used into the KM's done.

Apart from using a known amount of fuel in a special container This is the ONLY way I would measure consumption.

The MFD readout is about as accurate as predicting the future. All these people who say I got XXXX km out of a tankful are rubbish.

How many know what the tank holds. Even saw one who said he went somewhere and had about half a tank left

How much is ABOUT HALF A TANK. They are dreaming if they think they are getting anywhere near a grip on their actual consumption.

                            EG measure by the tankful.

My Passat will go from Brisbane to Coffs Harbour do a bit of running round and get back to Brisbane on a tankful.

So will my 4.2l Diesel Landcruiser. Are they comparable Absolutely NOT but by saying that they appear to be.

All rubbish doing it that way as the Cruiser uses almost twice the fuel and has a tank twice the size so to some would appear to be equal.

Which, btw, is what you have to do on a novated lease anyway. Record odometer, record what you paid (or keep receipt of fuel card transaction). Not like the leasing company is going to let you email them an iphone photo of your MFD screen.
