Passat wagon cargo/boot divider?

Hullo,

In our current crappy Magna wagon we have a useful metal divider separating the boot from the rear seats which is great to keep the dogs where they are supposed to be.

I asked the VW dealer what's available for the Passat Wagon and was told

No sorry we don't offer a Cargo Barrier for the Passat , due to the safety and design standards.

Uhm. Obviously it's not breaking Mitsubishi "safety and design standards". Also, as shown here (for example) it's available at least in the UK and Ireland: Volkswagen Accessories - Load protector

After sending the links the dealer is checking whether it can be sourced for down here, but does anybody have any experience with getting and installing these in a Passat?

In the past, I've asked the same question, and was given the same answer - the cargo barrier was not ADR-compliant. There's nothing stopping you from importing one from overseas yourself, but if you fit it to your car and have an accident, you may have issues with your insurance.

So far as I can see from the photos, it looks like a removable barrier, unlike most of the ones that are available for other cars locally. Most cargo barriers that I've seen bolt into place, and are not easily removable. Perhaps that has something to do with it.

I'd be interested in a steel cargo barrier as well, if you can source one. In the meantime, there is a 'soft' retractable barrier that is standard in all Passat B6/B7 wagons - it sits just behind the horizontal cargo cover, and you just pull it out and hook it into the slots in the roof lining. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

You should be able to find a good quality aftermarket cargo barrier. As you are in Victoria, try the RACV. Doing a Google search, I came up with this Cargo Barriers and there are a whole lot of others as well.

I would not be too concerned about it not having a VW logo. I seriously doubt that VW actually make them anyway.

I've been down this path already - None of the Australian manufacturers (Hayman Reese, Milford Industries, Black Widow, Ausguard) produce cargo barriers suitable for the Passat. Some make barriers for the VW commercial, Tiguan or Touareg, but not for the passenger cars.

Ok, maybe it's not ADRs, but Australian Standards AS4034.1:2008.

After checking on Germany's VW site which specifically lists that it will fit in the Alltrack, I handed the product ID to the dealer here and they will check whether it can be sourced and whether it requires and ADR. Its point isn't to protect the passengers from high-velocity debris - otherwise we'd all have steel cages in the back, mandatory. I just don't want the dirty dog paws on our precious nappa leather seats! I'm funny that way with a brand new car.

I've tried that too, and the answer was a resounding "No.". It doesn't show up in their parts system at all.

I think your best bet will be to import one privately from one of the European manufacturers - the Passat is very common over there, so you should have a range to choose from. I linked to a Travall one in my previous post, with was under 150 pounds + shipping. I would imagine that (assuming they ship internationally) you should be able to get one landed here for less than AU$400.

As long as the barrier does not have dangerous aspects to it, having no barrier has to be worse than having one.

I imported one, it costs about $450 or so. I probably won't use it if anyone wants to buy it, i might put it up for sale.

Well, I'll be. I sent an enquiry to Milford Industries, and got a reply:

Thank you for your enquiry. We do manufacture a barrier for the 3C Passat wagon, 2006 onwards, however it is a genuine Volkswagen product so would need to be purchased through a Volkwagen dealer. The Volkswagen part number is VGA805419PAS09. I hope this helps!

When I get a chance, I'll make an enquiry with a VW dealer to see what they say.

Something about endangering eyes. I'm not making this up. Either the dealer is lazy or ADRs are dumber than I thought.

I've just received a copy of the Passat-specific installation guide for the Milford barrier, and it is most definitely Australian Standards compliant. The installation manual specifies an install time of 2 hours, so I doubt we'll see much change out of $600 to purchase and fit the barrier.

As I understand it, the AS4034 standard is substantially more stringent than in the rest of the world, so the Milford barrier might be overkill for your purposes.

I've emailed my dealer to find out what the costs for the Milford barrier are, and I'll post again when I hear back.

I'm looking at the Milford website right now and when I try to narrow down the search for Volkswagen, the Passat doesn't even show up.

Looking at the photos though, it seems like that brand is what our current Magna has. Clunky, heavy, ugly, like something out of the 19th century. Ugh, if that's the only option, I think the dogs will just have to continue riding in the crappy other car.
