  • Passat R36 steering wheel

    Hi all,

Looking to replace my Golf6 In the next 6-8 months with an My10 R36. All My10's bar the R36 recieved the newer and much nicer multi-function steering wheel in the update. I was wondering if anyone knows if the newer steering can be fitted to an MY10 R36 after market or not.

    Thanks,
    Stoney!

In theory it should be possible - a lot of VW running gear seems to be fairly modular. I don't know how well you'd go fitting the button pods and the airbag to the R36 wheel though - the R36 got a steering wheel with a thicker rim than the other Passats. Do some measuring up and see. The cost of the airbag module might make the whole thing cost-prohibitive though.

I have fitted a Scirocco Steering wheel to my MY10.5 Passat and it works fine. was a simple changeover, no reprogramming required. These are available on ebay for about $5-600 delivered, make sure you ask for black stitching as there is brown and grey as well and I think they will send you whatever they have the most of!! The scirocco wheel is quite a lot fatter than the wheel supplied on MY10.5 onwards passats and has the shift paddles.

        Hi guys,

So I managed to get a genuine brand new Golf R MFSW with DSG paddles out of Europe WITH airbag intact last week.
If you wonder why I highlighted 'with', its because as some of you may know, it is now illegal to send an airbag unit via airmail as it is now classed as an explosive device due to the fact that it can apparently be triggered by even a static discharge.

The majority of the sellers I contacted all over Europe would not post to Australia, and the greater distributors still sell the wheels online but with the picture clearly displaying the fact that there is no airbag supplied.

Removed my old 8-button R36/Golf 5 steering wheel yesterday and slipped on the new Golf R DSG wheel without any hitches, took me about 10mins to swap them over.
Now, I have a VCDS error of 'no communication' present, and the horn, buttons and button lights do not work at all.
My car being a 2009, tell me the fact that i'm using a new wheel, means I need to upgrade the steering wheel controller under the steering column to a 'LIN 2.0' compatible controller, rather that the '3C0 953 549 AC' SW20 LIN 1.5 unit the car came with.

The last and easy question i'm hoping someone can help me with is, what is the latest Passat steering wheel controller part no.?
It MUST be a highline controller with SW30 or up, but I can't seem to find much info. Hopefully someone with a 10.5 or up Passat could do a quick VCDS scan and let me know what controller part no. they have?

Will post up some pics once it's working, its a fantastic wheel and totally transforms the interior, make me feel like i'm in a new car!

Problem solved! Thanks to the fellas who PM'd their advice, much appreciated.

Ended up finding the solution through lots of research, but good news is brand new Golf R steering wheel fitted, all working perfectly, no faulty codes and everything navigable via the MFD and DSG working also. STOKED!

Checked out these wheels & they are def. a big improvement over the R36 wheel. Considering picking one up myself, but my only concern is how can you be sure that the airbag is 100% operational once installed in an R36??

I am looking at Golf R or Scirocco steering wheel as well.. Any tips that anyone has would be great, this would be on a new mid 2012 built car so I am hoping that the controller will be ok.

booba, we have spoken about this quite a bit over the past 4-5 months. Have a look in this thread 125Tdi mods. I know there are other threads we have discussed it in but I don't recall them right now. See if I (or someone else) can locate more chat later on & where to get them. To ease any doubts, the GTI-Scirocco flat bottomed wheels can be put on our Passats.

I installed a MK6 wheel on my 08 R36 Wagon. Wheel part number was 1K0 419 091 AA YCP, steering wheel control module part number was 3C0953549AH and airbag part number was 5K0 880 201 G 81U.

No problems with anything. The SWCM needed coding, particular for the cruise.

Not sure if it makes any difference, but I also did the CAN Gateway (3C0 907 530 Q) and Instrument cluster (3AA920880) at the same time.

The wheel was a pretty simple retrofit and I much prefer it to the original R36 wheel, both in look and feel.

                      I don't get it
I'd always considered my R36 wheel as being pretty awesome.
Especially when I drove a $130k A6 last week and found it's wheel thin and cheap feeling.
Are these other wheels that much better? Just curious

I prefer the MK6 wheel over the R36 wheel. It's a combination of the multi function buttons and the feel of the wheel in the hand. The R36 wheel just feels a bit "off" for some reason.

I picked up the car from Sydney in Feb with the MK5 wheel and drove it home to Melbourne and it was ok, but I've just recently done the same trip return with the MK6 wheel and it seemed quite a bit nicer, and the extra multi function buttons are welcome.

Sorry I can't be anymore concrete than that. I guess it is also possible that I want the new wheel to be that much better after spending $800 odd...

Comparing a Mk6 R wheel to an R36 wheel is like chalk and cheese.
After all, a R36 wheel is just a poverty spec Mk5 Golf/Jetta wheel which is pretty nasty.

The Golf R wheel and Scirocco R DSG knob has transformed the interior and brought the car into modern day rather than yester-year IMHO.

That's harsh. For a driver's car I consider things like the size and feel in the hands and the std wheel is fine for me.

I've driven a Golf R and didn't notice the wheel to tell the truth
