I know all noobs seem to ask the same ol questions (all the long termers will be rolling their eyes) but what engine oils are you guys using in your 2.0 TDI's?

Is the castrol edge 5W30 VW spec the oil most guys use? Or nulon, penrite, liqui moly or are there not many DIY'er here and just get the dealer to service their cars?

Haha yes it's a bit like that, I was just curious if any passat owners had any recommendations based on their personal experience on this platform.

Approved oils are one thing but at times certain oils perform better than other approved oils in certain platforms (obviously it would be nice to have quantified results such as a lab report v's a comment like use xyz oil my car idled really smooth after using that type comments...)

VW services use Castrol EDGE Professional Longlife III which I see is the same thing as Castrol Edge FST just under a different name. Most peolple on the forum mention it as first recommendation but plenty of other substitutes around. If you want top quality, then Liqui Moly TopTec 4200 is the way to go but will cost you $110 or more for 5 litres. As long as they have the 504 / 507 coding, you should be fine. I mentioned in another section that would prefer to change Castrol FST twice per year than once with Liqui Moly. I change my oil between services once, end up with new engine oil every 6 months and about 6,000 kms. Just prefer it that way.

There are two Castrol Edge FST oils and only one is approved for VW504/507 Its the 5W-30 the other is a 502/505 for NON DPF engines

So be careful.

Otherwise the cheapest way is buy Penrite Enviro+ 5w-30 Approved VW when its on special at one of the Accessory shops for about $69

Its all very well to say my car idles better on XXXX but if its not an approved oil and you have engine problems you may be on your own for repairs as VW may well do an oil analysis and refuse a claim due to oil contamination or something.

Just so you know my Passat had its 60,000km service recently and the DSG oil was $299. 90 for 6 L

I mentioned in another section that would prefer to change Castrol FST twice per year than once with Liqui Moly. I change my oil between services once, end up with new engine oil every 6 months and about 6,000 kms. Just prefer it that way.

Obviously all oils that are VW 504/507 approved meet the minimum specification and will do the job, but i agree dinot81, oil is cheap insurance and that changing it twice as often, using the cheapest approved oil is better than changing it once with the most expensive.

Just as a comparison, LandRover Disco 4 TDI has 26000km oil change intervals. Way too long IMHO.

I have a heap of castrol edge 5W30 A3/B4 that I bought on sale for use in my petrol cars. I'll exchange one of those at SCA for the castrol edge 5W30 DPF VW 504/507 oil (I'll have to chuck in an extra $5.07 as the DPF version is more expensive)

Here is bit of a comparison between Castrol EDGE FST, Castrol EDGE Professional LongLife III (what VW fills at service and some overcharge if you buy from them) and Penrite Enviro+. These are suitable for DPF:

You will see that the two Castrol oils are identical in specs with Penrite Enviro+ having slightly more Ash but should not be an issue. Wait for specials and buy bulk. As long as they remained sealed, can be stored for long time. I paid $55 for Castrol EDGE FST 5W-30 and still have another left. Plus can fill up into dad's Golf (petrol engine) as well. They come from factory with Castrol oils and I prefer to stick to same brand in this case. You should have Castrol written on the oil cap on the engine.

Yup bugger all differences between the specs of the castroland penrite, except the castrol can be had for dirt cheap on bathurst SCA annual sales, or at times they have a random blowout special on castrol edge (I got about 40L worth for $29.99 for each 5L edge 5W30 A3/B4 about 2 years ago!!)

Just be careful that A3 / B4 is not recommended for TDI engines especially DPF. That's different spec of oil. Lot cheaper than the FST for DPF diesel.

In addition to above, Castrol EDGE A3/B4 has different classification:

• Petrol : SL*, (SJ, SH and all superseded classifications):
• Diesel : CF
• ACEA A3/B4, High performance shear stable petrol/diesel engine oil
• BMW Longlife-01
• VW 502 00/ 505 00 (NOT 504/507 which is your longlife and VW recommended oil)
• MB-Approval 229.3/ 229

Here are the specs for this oil:



You will notice that the amount of Ash is almost twice as high as the other ones mentioned above, very bad for DPF and the actual oil itself as will collect more dirt (Ash / Sulphate) inside the engine. More sulphate, more smoke, more soot in your DPF (will clog-up faster). My advice is stay away from this oil in TDI engines.

This one would be the safest option.

Yes I got the castrol edge DPF!

I got sidetracked writing my post, I bought a heap on sale and had about 20L worth of the A3/B4 oil, I took it to SCA today and exchanged 10L for the edge DPF!

Came in handy!

Bloody ryco, they wanted $52 for an engine oil filter... Get stuffed, I went to my local VW dealer and they were around $24, and the supposedly one time use sump plug was $5 odd.

Cant believe the Chermans didnt design the car with a F&R central jack point... So you have to jack the car from the side and put your cars stands under the front subrame... Crazy... Found this pic:



The V's in my jack stands didnt fit the control arm very well, so I placed a heap of timber under the sills (just in case...)

I might invest in a oil extraction pump or some ramps next time to make things easier... And to buy a fumoto oil drain valve to save buying new sump plugs every time i do an oil change...



My BMW is much better has a great central jack point, trap door in the plastic undertray to access the sump plug (saves removing the whole entire tray)

Hi all I got the thermostat replaced last week it cost $615! Wow. But yes they had to remove oil filter and housing plus oil cooler then alternator then could get the thermostat out and reverse to replace it all with new gaskets/seals etc and fluids. Most of the cost was labor.
ABS fault was not fixed as it has to be replaced and re-mapped by VW using their secret codes. So off to the VW dealer next week for them to start scratching their heads as to what is wrong with it.
I think it will be expensive as they quoted $160 per hour for diagnostics only. (Not bad for a plug in readout of faults).
I shall report back on the ABS progress. Sad face sad face sad face.

Hi all, I just replaced the rear ABS sensors and hey presto ABS fault gone (well it has done 300 metres). I hope it stays fixed but am going to give it a week or two before I trust it again.
It is up for sale at the end of March if anyone is looking for a used Passat wagon.
