I guess the pressing question is whether VWA is going to allow the release of cars if they arrive in Australia prior to the scheduled formal launch date (which is when?).
The short answer would have to be no. There's been R36's in the country for a few weeks now and yet no one I know or who have spoken to has been told they're about the receive theirs. There isn't even an informal launch date for us to use a guestimate. At this stage the best I can say is this. You will have your R36 before Christmas if it was ordered before now. I imagine most people would be driving their R36's by September but it could October. If it's any sooner I'd surprised but pretty happy at the same time for everyones sake.

          • was down talking to my dealer today (also checked out the R50 they had, bloody nice) and they mentioned that my R36 wouldn't have bluetooth. VW are working on a bluetooth module that interfaces with the RNS510, with touch screen intergration, they asked if this was an issue, I said i was happy to wait for a premium bluetooth unit.

Yeah I got the same thing: apparently the BT unit does not integrate with the RNS unit but my dealer tells me a fix is on the way. It;s a software thing it seems... I ordered BT anyway as I will definitely need it as my car will be a work vehicle.

Another call from the dealer today explaining the luxury car tax increase and so on. Basically, if we can't have the car by July 1 we'll just pay for it earlier and take delivery later. Easy. She does expect us to have it by then, though, and hasn't heard anything more about VW about holding the car back.

Unfortunately, several hundred Passat wagons are missing the reversing camera they are supposed to have. Ours is one of them, and we were given the option of getting out deposit back and cancelling the order, reordering and waiting until the car is built in August, or accepting the car with a $500 refund and the expectation and retrofit will be made available.

I asked if she could hunt around for an R36 (any colour) with RNS510, Dynaudio, auto tailgate, and so on... but there aren't any unallocated on their way.

So, we went with the last option - the $500 refund and eventual retrofit.

                Oh well.
Has anyone received VWA confirmation that the reversing camera can actually be retrofitted? My wagon arrived in the country last week and the dealer told me that VWA are currently working on a fix, but do not have a definite solution yet.

                • I was told yesterday that they're still working on it but don't really have any idea if or when it'll be ready.

To see how useful it is, I stole Dad's camera equipped Q7 today and used the camera to park. It was a lot easier to reverse in to tight spots with the camera without the camera... easy enough to annoy me about not being in my R36 just yet.

Also re: "premium" Bluetooth with complete RNS510 integration... ETA is a month or two. Nice.

                  • As of tomorrow there will be a Blue Wagon, Satnav, Dynaudio, Auto Tailgate, Bluetooth and UV Tint avalible at Highway VW in Brisbane. I have found it impossible to get finance (75k base, no other financial comitments, Full time in the same job for the past 4.5yrs) so i'll be ligter my deposit and some lucky person will have a new R36.

PS id like to thank the Stupid fat americans for ****ing up the finance sector.

                    • have you tried Stratton Finance, your in a similar financial position to me and I had no issue getting finance. If you still want the car give stratton and go and see what they can work out for you.

                      • To all you lucky ones who have taken delivery of their R36, the main thing I want to ask, which hasn't yet been covered is straight line acceleration. VW claim a 0-100km/h sprint of under 6 seconds for both sedan & wagon. Is this achievable in the real world? Standard power to weight equations would say not so but I saw that youtube video of the r36 speedo on a sprint at 6 secs dead but there was no mention as to whether any aftermarket mods had been done to the car.

                        Thanks guys!

It's more than just simple power to weight ratios. You have to remember that the DSG takes *alot* off the 0-100 sprint, compared to a normal manual, due to its quick change and therefore seamless power delivery. This makes a big difference.

Also, the Passat develops it's torque quite low(for a normally aspirated petrol car) and has a broad band of torque which also helps get it off the line very quickly.

Due to the fact that it is AWD, there is no wheel spin involved which can also rob a car of valuable time getting it on the move.

From what I have seen from the data that VW supplies with their cars, their 0-100 times are pretty much exactly what VW specified when it comes to being tested by reviewers and magazines, rarely being more than 1/10 sec out in the 0-100 times.

I have no doubt that the R36 should be good for it's claimed 0-100 in 5.6sec for the sedan and 5.8 for the wagon, depending on load of course.

I have no reason to doubt it. I haven't timed it against a stopwatch, but it is significantly quicker than my MkV GTI DSG.

I have the wagon, and usually VW are not over ambitious with their 0-100 times.

In the real world, 0-100 is not whats important to me. I would prefer 60-120 times - where the r36 feels bloody fast.

                            • Thanks for the feedback. It'll be interesting to see both MOTOR & Wheels write-ups once VW gives them one to review. I'm very close to ordering a black wagon...
