  • VW decides to replace my DSG Mechatronics unit!

    Hi all,
after much screaming and kicking VW has finally decided to replace Mechatronics unit
    I had following problems:

    1. Pronounce jerkiness on take off (despite smooth and constant accelerator application)
    2. weak but definite 2nd gear lurching

I had to report to them 3 times and each time I had to hand over the car for a day.
Here is what they have done each time:

    1. Changed DSG oil (obviously didn't do jack and they BS me with burnt oil WTF)
    2. Reset memory (slight improvement but it got worse very soon)
    3. Reset memory (no improvement at all but they decided to replace the Mech unit)

It was pain in the ass but I am very happy that they've decide to do the right thing and replace the mechatronics unit.

hopefully this fixes the problem. It didn't on mine and eventually had a new gearbox fitted.

I am experiencing similar problems (2010 V6FSI, 6000Km on the clock). Occasional jerky take off, a pronounced stutter when changing between 1st & 2nd and 2nd & 3rd. Doesn't happen all the time but in the last few weeks it seems to be happening more often. I'm going to call the dealer next week and book it in. I've been wondering how I'm going to explain/demonstrate the problem since it's intermittant.

Let us know when it's done and if it solves the problem. It's really the only issue I have had with the car, love it otherwise.

Dealer replaced mine on a mk v GTI at 33,000ks. I was experiencing jerkiness (the car not me) in reverse mainly but more alarming was that I had experienced "false neutral" on 3 occassions. The last one that I reported to the dealer clinched the deal for them to replace the mechatronics. This event was when I was making a right turn in the path of oncoming traffic, and I got a false neutral. I was rolling slowly and when the break came I gave it gas and nothing happened. By this time I had rolled into the path of traffic and could have been T boned.

FYI google "vw false neutral" and you will soon see that you are one of many with this problem. Let us know how you get on.

The improvement was amasing and I have done 6000 ks since the new unit with no more probs. They told me that it would cost $4-5K, lucky for warranty.

                my symptoms were:
on take off - rare to get a smooth take off, hesitant at times to go even when pressing the go pedal which became dangerous at intersections.
driving - gear changes were clunky at times, on moderate acceleration it would feel like it actually went into neutral for a split second then clunk into the next gear and shove you back into the seat.
reverse - always jerky with ANY accelerator pedal use.
had the gearbox "reset" several times and the mechatronics unit replaced once. Ultimately they replaced the gearbox at approx 75000k's.
New gearbox has improved the driving experience immensely although on a rare occasion i still get the clunky gear change when applying about 50% throttle.

I've just had my mech unit replace under stat warranty. I bought the car second hand (1 day out of factory warranty) and it was jerky takeoff, jerky reverse (with NO throttle!) and clunking when rolling away from stationary and no throttle. Happened the first night I got it, only when warmed up.

Just wondering, once they've replaced it, does it mean it won't happen again? or is it a wear and tear (thermal stress etc)? I wouldn't want to pay for a mech unit 4 year down the track cos it would have been $4500!

They told me that mine was faulty and the replacement was a rectification of the known problem, so I too am hoping that it will last.

Good on you , but i have the same trouble with mine except no one can decipher what the read out is saying, VWA has no idea and had to forward the bad code read out to VW in Germany
even they cant work out what causing the trouble except to suggest up grade all the software , which did nothing so now i;m waiting again to hear back from Germany as to what the next step is, The dealer said his hands are tied and can only do warranty work with VWA approval.
Barloworld has told me no one has ever seen what my car is showing on the VAG unit and doesn't know what to do , said i might have to leave my car with them for a week for further investigation and no loan car because its a warranty job .

                        Any one living in Victoria?
can we gather up and compare the jerkiness?
I'm sick of imagining how jerky other people's DSG unit is.

My car was 08 Passat from Barloworld Glenwaverley. I had to leave my car there for about 2 weeks for them to diagnose the problem. They said they sent the log files to VWde for analysis as they didn't know what it was.

The jerkiness I felt was big, as in when I was following my wife when picking up the car, it was bunny rabbit off the lights, I could SEE the car jerking at takeoff. And the I could not park in the garage as I can't roll with no throttle, it'll just launch to about 10km/h from standstill.

Basically it was like driving a car with a brass button clutch when trying to learn manual

Well just to add to the list of Passats with gearbox problems - I'm waiting on replacement clutch packs to come from Germany. Two weeks ago the car started vibrating as it was accelerating through 2-3000 rpm in 2nd 4th and 6th. You would also hear a rattle under light load in those gears - as well as the rev's flaring by about 100-200 rpm - felt exactly like a clutch slipping in a manual car.

Finally was able to take it into the dealer on Wednesday, they had to keep the car overnight as they were being instructed by VW Australia to perform different tests on it. Had a phone call at one stage on Tuesday asking whether I had modified the car at all as there was an error code thrown up that usually only happens on cars that have been chip tuned or the ECU modified. The car is completely stock - but it took a bit of convincing to make them believe that I had not modified the car. I found it unusual that they wouldn't be able to tell this anyway.

After keeping the car overnight and running some more tests on Thursday VW Australia has decided to replace the clutches in the car - so I have it back in the meantime and the vibration is getting worse as each day goes by. Todays drive home was quite eventful - will probably need to drive it in 1st 3rd and 5th until these clutch packs come in from Germany to get replaced.
                            Pete
