Fixed the problem
When it started trying to freeze me again today I put a manilla folder between the dash and windscreen so that it covered the sensor.
Within say 30 seconds the cold air reduced.
Can someone else with the same problem try it and confirm for me?2010 R36 Sedan

Doing some research and stumbled on this issue, the same issue I'm having with my Tiguan that has dual zone climate control and recently posted in that forum. As stated above, sunny days and the a/c starts chucking out cold air like a demon, frustrating as hell.
The car is actually with the dealer again. The first time they stated that their tests indicate that there is no issue with the unit/sensors. I suggested that perhaps a technician might explain to me how the system worked. I was intially told that in winter the a/c should be switched off to better engage the heat pump! I don't believe that that is an adequate solution for a quality euro car. Our other car, a Kia Grand Carnival, delivers first grade heat with the a/c light on so I expect VW to match or better this performance.
After some persistant fiddling a second senior technician was callled in and agreed that the a/c unit was not throwing out adequate heat for the set temp.
My understanding is that if the auto light is switched off by selecting less or more fan speed then the unit will pump air for the temperature set. Haven't really got mine to do that either.
So it is back in today for the a/c unit to be replaced. But whilst waiting for the courtesy bus the 'technicians' were gathered together and one mentioned that after investiagtion the 'wiring job' was alot larger than first anticipated and he might just re-test!! I hope he wasn't refering to my job!!
Will update shortly to inform of outcome!! Personally blocking the dashboard sunlight sensor is not a solution!!
Cheers

The unit has worked fine with the cardboard cover for the last 3 months until VW figure out what to do.
I did go for the OEM look by purchasing some black cardboard but it's faded to brown now
Please let us know the outcome David but I'm not optimistic they will sort it or even take it seriously
My dealer said they would look into it and let me know....still waiting 3 months later.
Will have to readdress the issue at the first serviceLast edited by R34; 24-10-2010, 10:20 PM.2010 R36 Sedan

R34,
Firstly let me apologise. The trouble and strife read my post and thought that the line you have quoted above might be seen as offensive. Let me assure that this was never the intention!! It can be very frustrating knowing that there is an issue with your purchase and being fobbed off with inconsistent/inferior solutions by those that sold you the car and made a song and dance about how good the service support is etc etc. .
I got the car back on Friday.... and I think they have solved the problem.
I believe that they have replaced the solar sensor situated in the middle front of the dash. This morning was a good test as it was sunny, about 10 deg outside and I had the unit set at 23 deg with the little fan AUTO lit and the A/C lit as well. The temp regulated well and after some driving into the sun the temp did cool a touch but NOWHERE near the behaviour before where it would increase fan speed and the temperature plummeted.
I believe these technicians contacted VW to ascertain whether they have dealt with this issue before. As a result that is when the called me up to get the car back for this work. I must add that depending on what office bod you talked too, it was the A/C unit being replaced or sensors or both - but I am confident that the young fella who mostly dealt with this issue was correct when he said that yes they were replacing the solar sensor as he had ordered the part himself.
Please PM me if you want the service areas number so you can call up and discuss. You might even get your blokes to give them a call to discuss. Gotta say that every time I hear "we plugged it into the computer and the computer says NO" drives me crazy. Recent issue with the other car has left us replacing some very expensive parts that did not fix the problem and we will now have to wait until the computer throws another fault code (won't be until next winter) or something fails. Can't wait.
Cheers

Just thought I'd throw a "me too" out there, same issue.
Mentioned it at the first week courtesy call and got fobbed off. Will press the issue at first service next year, or sooner if it bothers me too much.Icelandic Grey MY10 Passat 125TDI Highline Wagon - Sunroof - RVC - Ipod
