  • Need tyres.. recommendations

I have done 45K and need tyres..

I am running the OEM Continental Spot Contact 2's and was considering getting 3 new ones and rotating the spare onto the car but at a quoted $330 ea i may well be cheaper to get 4 of some other tyre..

I have been offered Sumitomo tyres at arounf $220 ea but TBH I know zip about tyres apart from they are round, black, and need air!

I dont need "performance" tyres, just regular wear/grip will be fine. The OEM tyres have lasted ok and I have no complaints apart from I am used to getting closer to 60K from a set..... on my XR6T and other cars.

There are a number of threads on here relating to black circles. I have written a review of the Sumitomos which in summary I reckon are excellent on my R36.

You haven't provided much detail on what tyres you need (size etc), however the Sumitomos in 18 inch are great - quiet, grippy and long wearing.

I cannot believe you got 45k out of a set of tyres, that is unreal. I think I got about 26k and was happy with that....

oh yeah... they are 17" rims so the tyres are 235/45 17

Thanks. I looked at the more recent threads but did not see anything jump out about tyres I'll have a search about the sumitomo's

www.carbonblack.com.au for australian tyres reviews to determine what ones you want that you can get here.

www.tirerack.com for tyres in US with cheap shipping due to high AU Dollar.

Both sites let you search by tyre size and compares to other tyres in that size.

If you've been happy with the tyres you have now on, then I would say get the same tyres. The 45,000km is good for life from the tyre of this size.

Another tyre to look at is the Kumho KU31. Work well on my Audi and I've never heard anything but praise for them.

While they're not necessarily the best, they are a FANTASTIC tyre. Such good value for money. I've had them on two previous cars and would have no trouble trying them on the R36 when I get new rims and need new tyres.

the KU31's are good for the price.
I had stock CCS2's and the Kuhmo's are a superior tyre for grip and comfort (on my car). If you don't know much and don't want to spend a lot, I'd consider them as a quality cheap tyre.

Well. I have no experience on KU31 but I decided to have Kumho KU37 on my passat when shops in Sydney quoted $350-420 EACH for same OEM Sportcontact2 about 2 years ago.
I paid less than half of the Conti for Kumho (had a little doubt at the beginning though) and have no complaint at all so far.

I am also looking for two new tyres. I have the CC with 18's. 7500km and my wife managed to hit a screw on the Calder Freeway. The self sealing tyres on the CC did not self seal and proceeded to flatten within minutes (screw was less than the 5mm they state will seal). I will not be spending $600 on the same tyre.
I will be looking at the tyres you guys have suggested. Does anyone else here have any other suggestions worth looking at?

I had a massive screw stuck in my ContiSportContact 3s and to my amazement and also the tyre repair's amazement they self sealed perfectly. Absolutely no issues.

I was cynical and took the tyre in to be inspected but it was in great shape.

If you go with Kumho's, try and contact a motorsport provider for cheaper prices.

I am getting them when my car arrives and i am going through option1garage (drift workshop) as they can get them for $210 a corner.

I just dropped the car off for 4 ea KU31's at $155 fitted and balanced per corner. Not a bad price IMO and at less than 1/2 price of the OEM tyres worth a try given the good reviews I have read...

Got the car back and very happy - $680 for 4 tyres and a 4 wheel alignment. A courtesy 10K rotate and balance thrown it too.
