Just wondering if anyone has had any of the catalic convertors removed from their R36. Have spoken to performance workshop and said they would have to have a look at the car as taking one of can make the car run like a dog.

Great to get feedback if anyone has tried this.

And before any one sais its illegal, I know, and why you ask ? to get better flow as I have ordered the Gruppe M CAI and also to get a little more grunty sound.

With the combined fines you would recieve for having each of the catalytic converters removed you could quite easily turbocharge the car for around 500hp...

Sure, its illegal, but who cares (I sure as hell don't, cos I'm not paying the fines )...See what they shops say about how it would run, then take them off, remove the catalyst from the inside, then refit them...Its an old trick that is done alot.

OK, after discussion with the mods, this thread will be re-opened, but with the following warnings:

1. Removing cats and then driving on public roads is illegal, and can net you VERY hefty fines (i.e. thousands of $). Do not post here about removing cats from road-cars.
2. You could do it legally for a track car.
3. Removing cats WILL affect the vehicle's tune, and thus the car would need to be custom-tuned to suit the new setup. There are very few people out there who have tuned R36s with the stock setup, let alone with cats removed. On a $70,000 car, this seems like an interesting way to me to void your warranty.
4. You MAY net a couple of extra KW... good luck with that...

I guess that the health of your family and others is also irrelevant? Perhaps you can also provide details for us to forward to the EPA? It's a damn stupid thing to do for road use

Off the top of my head it's something like a $10,000 fine form the EPA for screwing with the emission control systems.

On another note the Mk2's? (I think) were more powerful in other countries... because of the cat (and emissions gear) that was required in Australia. It's a shame there isn't a world wide standard for these things to make it easier for car makers to import vehicles into other markets. I understand somethings may be climate specific, but surely most of this stuff is common?

There's actually some really good articles regarding catalitic converters being worse for the environment that first thought. The whole point of their introduction was to lower Carbon Monoxide gases (which they do) but the net effect actually INCREASES a car's Carbon Dioxide gas emissions. While Carbon Monoxide gas is something you want to avoid and lower, it doesn't actually affect global warming as much as Carbon Dioxide does....

But at least catalitic converters meant the end of leaded petrol...

Messing with the emissions of ANY road registered car is definitely a STUPID thing to do. And as Swallowtail pointed out would also void your warranty. Not to mention MASSIVE fines. Good luck with it all. LOL

Right O Swallowtail. Can you please close this for me. It seems many people in this forum get their nose out of joint to easy as per my last discussion you also closed for me . Yes I mentioned it was illegal OP.

I don't really think there is a discussion here. No one has removed their cats, so alll commentary is conjecture.
