I diagnosed an 06 Passat 2.0T a while back for a blowing exhaust, found to be the flange at the turbo sheared off, this i thought was a one off, so i checked with VW parts to verify this by asking how many they had sold in the year, mines was the 1st so pretty much put it down to a flaw one off. Just looked at another today and yep clean shear at the turbo. Not so much of a one off now. Will be keeping a close eye on them now, if you caught it in time you could remove the section and yeah its a bit of a pain but would save you in the long run with a nice seam weld before disaster.

Flange of the exhaust frontpipe that bolts direct to the hairdryer boss. leaves the flange on their and drops the 1st cat. Shining a torch across shows the exposure of the turbo impeller ex exit side, scary sight. When the guy rang me and explained what was up it was diagnosed on the phone pretty much, waved the torch in the zone and there it was an impeller. So much for the one off so keep an eye on it. If it is showing any signs i would for sure get it off and have it welded there and then. when it breaks its so clean you are strapped to pick up the original spot so welding when broken would be nasty unless you offer up and whack a tack on it, again a PITA. Vw dont miss you with the exchange part either.

Piccies to come before i send it back as an exchange unit, seriously guys its not cheap and if it can be sniffed out early, it well worth a bit of labour to have it welded up , the factory welds if you can call them that are non existant. Stay tuned for pics tomorrow, disappointing really but if found early will save you a whack, not much change out of $1700 as it houses both cats.
