I would want the dealerships to know what each other are selling their cars for. This results in better deals for ALL OF US.

I'm not trying to have a go at you here, but I would be more than happy to let people know what I paid for my car and they'd be more than welcome to name me. In fact, I did exactly that last week on a different part of this forum.

On another note, I was thinking about what the situation for the potential buyer (wasn't me btw) must have been at the time. I reckon the guy (or girl) said that they knew of someone who got $xxx and the stealer probably demanded who or else they wouldn't believe. Then they've called you up to spread some manure around. There's a term for it in the auto industry, 'Spraying' - and that's one form of it.

If the dealer isn't prepared to sell at a price he's not obliged to do so regardless of what he sold to you for. I don't see the big deal, nor do I think that a car dealer has any right to get on a high horse about dodgy negotiation techniques... they are hardly paragons of moral virtue.

It's unfortunate that he dropped your name in it, that I grant...

I should add that I have no idea who it was...

          x eleventy billion, haha.

The issue here seems to be the OP is pissed off that information he himself posted has been used to identify himself. Hello, is there anybody home!

Once information is out there, you have no control over how it is used in future. Hopefully a lesson has been learnt here.

I agree, information on a public form is exactly that, once you have posted it then you give up any right to secrecy or privacy.

Im just trying to figure out how he identified you from your username?

"Yes mr salesman, this guy called "kgbagent" on vwwatercooled got an awesome price on a car can you do the same for me?"

I just think its a typical case of sales guys trying to protect their margins.

I'd be pi$$ed the dealer rang me to complain after the deal was done and I'd moved on.

Seriously I think a buyers group helps all buyers negotiate fair deals, and the more transparent the better. Publish away your prices!

HAHA So the OP gave his name ,dealers name and a good price on a car to someone and they used it to get a similar deal? Isn't that the idea of sharing info like that? Why else would you give the info out?

A big high five to whoever it was who tried to negotiate the good price with OP's info. If that dealer got ****ty about it go to another who wants to sell you a car and get the following years of service$ and potential future sales as well.

Like Kwicks said I'd be super pissed at the dealer for having a sook to me about it after you sale was done.

Buying a car shouldn't be any different from buying a TV/Fridge/House. The more info you can gather from forums etc, the more informed you are and the better chance you have of getting what you are after for the best possible price.

Agreed. The dealer should be THANKFUL that your recommendation/information brought another customer in the door. At the end of the day the sales guy will either sell for the price or say bugger off. End of story. No harm, No foul IMO

Unless you SIGNED a Commercial in Confidence clause or similar, the sales guy has no leg to stand on regarding you sharing your "great" deal info with others...

Just make sure to tell the sales guy that you wont recommend him nor buy from him if that's the way he thanks you for providing sales prospects.

BTW did he make the sale? If so you should hit him up for a spotters fee...

Truth be told this bloke probably got an even better deal.

No biggee I say. The dealers aren't the victims, if they don't wanna sell for any given price - they're not obliged to. I'd be happy to post what I paid for my car.. Which unfortunately wasn't that great a deal.. I think I got a free bag of burger rings or something.

In fact, if I was you I'd be ringing up the dealer demanding a spotters fee.
                    I support Kryten's comments.

I'd suggest that you got a great deal kgbAgent, and the dealer is a bit pi$$ed that he had to offer the same deal to someone else, without the ability to pull a swifty.

If the dealer phones you for a whinge, hoping that you pass it on to the forum, then there is a chance that it will happen less in the future - its a 'divide and conquer' strategy.

It was probably wrong to use your quote without checking with you first, but I fully support the idea of sharing info on here to support/help our members. this is part of the reason the forum exists

Yesterday the dealer I bought the car off rang me and said that someone from this forum used MY NAME and MY QUOTE and THIS FORUM to try and negotiate a similar price for themselves. Both I & dealer were well pi**ed off

So if the asswipe who did that reads this then an apology is well in order.

I gave out that info to find out if my offer was any good and then to also assist others in ballpark figures that dealers would consider.

The final negotiation is up to the buyer & they did NO help to themselves by taking that approach & did no favours to this forum either.

I will be far more circumspect in future

Hmm, case of double standards here methinks.

OP wants the benefit of everyone's experience and then gets annoyed when one person gets the benefit of his experience.

Why would anyone get annoyed when a car salesman (commonly thought of as the lowest forms of life after politicians) crys foul? I'd have laughed in the car salesman's face, and told him to expect far more of the same......

It's because they don't want you to realise how much you're being ripped off

I suggest you think again... the reason I joined here was for the benefits of learning all sorts of things. One of which was whether the quote I had was any good & whether others agreed. Several ppl PM'd me about the final price I paid & I was happy to give the info to them much as I was happy to get the comments on the quote from others here.

I have no problem with anything other than the person who did not have the courtesy to ask if they could use that info. I certainly resent the fact that they used my name.

As others mentioned I dont have my full name displayed anywhere on this forum. I dont give a flying f aboot the salesman or the dealers emotions or reasons.

If the person who tried that approach could get that info from here the least they could do is ask if they could use the info. Personally I hope the dealer told them to bugger off

If the info was either posted on this PUBLIC forum or shared via PM with no conditions then the person who used the info for their benefit did nothing wrong IMO.

If in future the OP has concerns about the use of such info then they should ensure that the ground rules are laid down in advance of disclosure

You gave up the information into the public domain with no rules regarding it's use.

Then you get upset when it helped a fellow vwwc member out by using your quote as a bargaining chip.
If it were me, I would have been glad to help another dubber out, rather than ragging on everyone for using the information you posted on a public forum.

Your main problem is that the information was used without your permission and that your username was used, but what difference does it make in the long run really?
