I'm not making any progress on this with my friendly VW dealer...
Realizing that it will be impossible to obtain a white one without the sunroof, I have asked for an offset in cost against the sunroof to the tune of $1000, basically the cost of metallic paint. I think this is a fair arrangement, they don't....yet.

I'll keep you posted...
Go to another dealer, tell them the price you're willing to pay for the car you want with the spec you want, and if they want you to sign there and then they have to supply at that price... I once did that on a Holden I bought, and after 2 hours of clogging up their floor they'd dropped $9000 on a $48,000 car..

That's bullsh*t mate!!! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT'S MEANT TO HAPPEN!!! VW know this which is why all white R36's come with a sunroof - because white is NOT metalic. You should be speaking to VW directly about that rip off dealer. Man I hate dealers like that.
My advice is... if you're not happy with the price then don't sign for it.
Seriously, the dealer has you over the barrel anyway. $1k you think you're saving here, is quickly gotten back somewhere else. Don't argue specific things like that since they will then say OK you can have that.... and when you ask for your other options and a discount... they'll say... 'we've done the discount' and there you are.
Look at the bottom line, and bargain the driveaway price. Just my advice.
Checking the German VW site I noticed that I am unable to 'configure' a white R36 without a sunroof, BUT the white car with a sunroof is cheaper than a metallic one with a sunroof to the tune of 540 euros. That sounds like a fair deal.

Agree, determine the price you are happy to pay drive away. Let them figure out how to construct the deal. If you start with specifics, you will gain a bit here and then they will make it up (with some more) elsewhere. They are car dealers after all!!

We came to an agreement on price, which was:
Wagon-Satnav-Auto tailgate $67200 drive away
I had yet to choose a colour and was given time to do so. When a couple of days later I chose white and was told I must have a sunroof and pay the extra, which increased the price by another $2800, I was a little dissapointed. The fact that they're not offering a discount for non-metallic paint in this instance I find stubborn.

___kers!!! Can you contact VWGA and get some sort of official response and then it is as has been suggested on the forum, present that to the dealer? Part of the problem here is that you have a car in high demand, next to no stock and then you have a growing trent towards white...the dealers have got us over a barrell!

Yep, i think they are taking the p*ss here.
I signed an order for the same price for either a white one with a sunroof or a grey one without as they said that was the best chance of getting one. I would take my business elsewhere!
