The photos won't be much - the end look is going to be exactly like stock. With the exception of a thumping big four channel amp under the passenger seat LOL. But I'll post details of what's going in when it's done.

Swallowtail, why not ise the amp that is already there to power the rear door speakers and use the new amp to power the fronts and add a sub to the new amp/ cheers pj

Apom, happy to discuss details with you offline, but in terms of my agreement with Austral and how it's worked out I think it best to keep it offline, in the interests of fairness to Austral and the supplier / fitter between whom we have all worked out an excellent deal. Suffice to say that I am happy (or will be when it is all sorted out) and getting the cash would have been a distinctly worse option...

Also I do need to say that today Austral have been excellent in their attitude and willingness to do what it took to make me happy. As someone else said earlier - kudos to them for wanting to sort it out.
It's good to see that it's working out for you and that their willingness is proving to be beneficial. I wanna see some pics too!

As far as I am aware there is no amp... the standard system is just the 4-way output from the head unit. All I have done is go to the experts and say "I have $xxxx - give me the best you can with the existing head unit for those $". End result is as above...

I am not after a sub, I am after tight, well controlled bass and mid-range with a crystal clear top end that places me in the music... I'm not worried about db levels or how low it will go...

I just went out and had a look under the passenger seat - there is definately an amp there. Theres a plastic shroud covering it but you can see (and feel) the cooling fins behind it.

That's great for you and encouraging about Austral too.

Good to see it worked out well.

There you go... the sound quality of it is pretty ordinary!

The stock system is fantastic! Quality is great! I seriously don't understand what more all you guys who want better than the standard system want. Do you get music in your car with good bass and decent clarity? Yes. What more could you want? lol

Yeah I'd have to admit, for a 70K car, you'd expect a little better than what they've supplied. Turned up some of my favourite trance tracks and at higher volumes it started to fall apart earlier than I though it would.

I'm also assuming that the standard "10 speaker" system is
bass, midrange and tweeter in front doors and a mid and tweeter in rear doors?

Exactly what I found... the bass and midrange just disappear to mud once you push it a little. But, hey, one man's poison...

Yes, the std is a 3way setup in each front door and a 2 way in the rears.

Jesus! When I turn my standard system up, it gets louder than I would ever be able to tollerate for long periods of time before distorting and I have the bass and treble both pretty high. I feel old listening to you guys! hahaha... Feeling old at 29 is not a good thing!

I also like that I can change the individual output levels of the speakers to make it feel like I'm in the centre of the sound rather than to one side.

for a stock system it's OK, but some change will work wonders... loudness isn't what I want...

The plastic cover pulls off and the amp is held in place by 2 allen key bolts. Theo at GT Auto Sound (SA) only discovered this when the new amp was 'fired' up and there was no noise. The standard was then found by following the speaker wiring. The standard speakers are fine until you go mad with the volume, not sure yet whether that's a failure of the standard amp or the speakers. Will know more when the external xovers are installed. Btw also installing the VW MMI, which I am advised is very good. cheers pj
