Thanks for that. Just to check ... are the cheap carpets actually mats (ie. an additional piece of fabric), or did you mean there are no mats and that you just get the carpet that is attached to the floor?
And did you get an umbrella as suggested in an earlier post?
. . .I got my R36 aligned the same day as I took delivery and the guy from Beaurepaires said they were way out of alignment and the tyres would have lasted only 20,000 kms . . .
Yeah, well that's what they would tell you now wouldn't they?
Why would you go and have a wheel alignment done on a brand new car? Any apparent wear should be picked up by the dealer during a routine service and if such a severe alignment really existed, it would be a warranty issue. A waste of money in my view.
Because the dealers do as little as possible to get the car out the door! With the average large Brisbane dealer selling 200-400 cars a month, do you honestly think they line up every car to make sure the wheel alignment is correct!

Thanks again.
Cheap mats mate. The umbrella is not standard but I ordered mine from the VW website and it arrived the next day.

LOL!!! Every car I have taken delivery of, including brand new cars which I have had 5 of, have had mis-aligned wheels. It's not surprising really. A dealer isn't going to wheel align EVERY car before the deliver them to the customer and a factory isn't going to do a wheel alignment before the cars are shipped to the dealer. You'd be pretty damn stupid NOT to get a wheel alignment done with a week of taking delivery IMO.

No. I don't. Nor do I think they will make sure they will deliver a 100% faultless car. That's what warranties are for. So that if there is something they missed or there is a fault with the car, you can get it fixed without cost to you. And unless I am seriously wrong, that includes any abnormal tyre wear.
Then you are seriously wrong. Because serious tyre wear cannot be proved to be caused by mis-aligned wheels. You're a funny guy though... Lots of laughs about work safety rules! Hahahaha!
1.Broken pen clip in glovebox (Fixed on 1000km check)
2. The ordered door Umbrella was missing, salesman ran to spare parts to get one only to come back with a VW beach umbrella that was about a meter long He didn't even know there was a holder in the drivers door for one. So that was also supplied at the 1000km checkup.
When I got the car home and looked at the paint in the sun there were a few fine scratches on the roof and bonnet but just polished them out myself.
Also noticed the wheel alignment was out on the drive home and it took them 2 goes to get that right.
So I guess my 2c on the matter is to just go through the whole car on delivery and:
-open and close everything
-check all the gaps on the doors and bonnet etc are nice and straight
-make sure everything is actually in the car that was ordered
-check the paint in the sun if possible -not in the showroom lighting.
-if possible go for a quick drive to check the the steering wheel/alignment is OK.
And it wasn't the end of the world with the little things that were wrong as the dealer and VW will call you all the time to make sure you are happy anyway.

Yes, I would have to concede that it would be difficult to prove. I've had a few new cars and never had an issue with wheel alignment, so forgive me if I retain my skepticism of the need to do a wheel alignment on a brand new car.
