  • 2008 R36, RNS510, mute button issues.

    Hi,

I have an R36 that I took delivery of in June last year. It's fitted with the RNS510 system.

Intermittently - perhaps 10% of the times I start the car - I have noticed that the mute button on the steering wheel (the star) doesn't function as it should: it doesn't mute at all. All other functions seem to be unimpaired. There doesn't seem to be a pattern - as in there's no one state the RNS510 is in (media/map/navigate/etc) and the MFD display doesn't seem to have an impact, either.

It seems as though the only way to fix the problem is to power off the car, rather than the RNS510, and re start it.

Has anybody else encountered such a problem, or have any suggestions as to the cause? I'll be due for the 15000km service fairly soon and getting the problem fixed can wait until then.

    Cheers!

Weird! Something for the friendly dealer people to look at, I guess.

I was a bit out with my guesstimate about servicing too... another 3800km to go. I think I'll hit 1 year before I hit 15000km

The more time I spend on this forum the more evidence I encounter to support the comments from many motoring jouralists that the "hit and miss" quality issues with VW's are ongoing.

It seems to be a roll of the dice type of thing. You either get lucky or not.

        Shame.

Autopia, maybe you should cancel your order if you dare!

Or maybe spend sometime on any other car manufacturer forum and see that every manufacturer has problems. Keep in mind every car manufacturer is trying to reduce their costs and still make reasonable cars, unfortunately with that comes compromise with quality and reliability issues.

Keep in mind the only two major problems are DSG issues with VW models prior to MY09 from what I can see (problem with software or mechatronics module) and RNS510 (dieing or software lockups while navigating).

I realise that every manufacturer has problems but my point was simply to acknowledge that what the motoring journalist have said is true. I haven't seen them make the same regular comments about any of the other VAG brands (Audi & Skoda).

I still intend to buy the wagen as I feel I've had my share of reliability issues with my previous Renault Clio Sport and also there is simply nothing else on the market that offers the same value for money or bang for your buck.

That's quite bizzare since the components between AUDI/VW/SKODA are pretty much interchangeable. You will realize this once you receive your vehicle and pop the bonnet for the first to find that everything is pretty much labeled VW/AUDI.

Also keep in mind that only a very few of the VW models for example the R36 is actually manufactured in Germany, but unfortunately the majority of the VW models around the world would probably be the Golf, which can originate from South Africa or Portugal, which somehow don't think will have the same quality control as in Germany.

Lots hope your R36 will be kind to you.

I'm fairly sure the R36 is made in Emden, Germany...

Just a refresh on this issue - I too have the sometimes unreliable mute button - has anyone heard of a solution ?

yep, think i solved it myself. If you press the mute button when the system is in startup mode it then tends not to work. Have noticed this a couple of times myself.

Sounds like you need to allow the unit to start up before pressing heaps of buttons (only takes a few secs).

Solved it for mine - updated the firmware so now the star button launches voice control not mute... LOL.

The rate your going with your firmware updates mate, you'll have the traction control off button turn your car into a Transformer!

LOL - great idea... Optimus Prime here I come! Does that mean Megan Fox will come for a ride...

As to coming down to Melbourne, I can always cope with an all-expenses paid trip...

Seriously, it's just the one firmware update to 2660, but part of it is that the Star button no longer mutes, it launches the voice control capability of the RNS.
