No fool would buy the premium kit without a phone capable of using it.

One of the Audi forums has a list as at late last year of RSAP-capable phones, and your local VW dealer parts department can get hold the list too. I do know that all Nokia N-Series and E-Series phones are RSAP capable, as are most, if not all HTC phones. The reason the Iphone isn't RSAP capable, is due to the legalities regarding copywright laws. As time goes on, RSAP will be a more common feature on future phones, just like when Bluetooth came out back in the day. Now just about every phone on the market has Bluetooth.
there is also another issue: phone makers buy a bluetooth chip which provides most of the functionality. there are a range of prices/ vs capabilites of these chips. no doubt the cheaper ones dont have rsap.

What are you comparing it with and based on what sample size?

    buy the premium kit.
...that won't work with a not-insignificant number of phones out there... Google "mobiles that support rsap" if you think I'm pulling your leg. And it's not just iphones, it's nokias etc as well.

Don't know about you, but I'd be as p*ssed as anything to spend that much money and then have to buy a new phone as well...

I can tell you straight up, that from a reliability viewpoint, the Nokia kits are far superior. We've not had a single one come back yet. I've not had any issues with pairing, either.

In regards to the premium kit, as at last month, it was all but signed off, ready to be released. I believe they were just overcoming a few marketing things. As for phone support, the list of capable phones is growing by the month.

The way VW sees it, is if you're just happy to use Bluetooth for it's sheer convinience, then buy the basic kit. If you want to step it up and use the steering wheel, instrument cluster, and radio unit to interface with your high-end smart phone, then buy the premium kit.

In regards to A2DP, due to the way the car is wired, it will only play in Mono, and with very poor sound quality.
The Nokia kit that VW currently offer is very limited functionality. To be honest it's probably not as good as a properly installed Parrot. And the premium kit that is on its way will only work with phones that support rsap, thus ruling out a significant number of phones. The VW dealer I'm buying my car from said to me that the basic one is crap, and the premium one they can't bring in cos of the limited phone support and issues.

You pays your money you takes your choice...

That's why I said above - don't bother with it... waste of money. You can get the Fiscon unit from Kufatec shipped to Aus at current exchange rates for about $800, so similar price to the factory (very) basic Bluetooth which is completely crap.

It's apparently easy to fit - pull out the stereo unit from the dash, pull the plug out of the back and fit the Fiscon's connector in between the stereo and the cable, locate the box in there somewhere, run the mike to the top of the steering column.

You need to get VW to do a VAGCOM code change, but ask your dealer nicely they'll do it no problems. Or find someone with VAGCOM to do it for you...

At the comparable price with the hugely better functionality, I know what I'm going to get...

Perhaps if anyone else wants one I should do a group buy, may be able to save a few $... Thoughts anyone?

pretty hopeless - rip off for $800.00!

The basic VW bluetooth isn't worth the money, as it doesn't integrate with anything in the car (i.e. RNS510, dash display), and is very limited functionality. Don't bother.

I have ordered my R36 w/o Bluetooth and am planning on fitting one of the Fiscon units (www.kufatec.de). I have also ordered the MDI unit to enable full iPod functionality for my iPhone with the RNS510 (artist display, etc).

EDIT - it's this one that I am getting: http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_i...VW--Skoda.html

It also supports A2DP, which the iPhone will from software 3.0, due later this year, so it will then also play audio over Bluetooth.
