As Swallowtail said you need the ipod cable to go with the mdi (part number is 000 051 446 C for the ipod & 000 051 446 B for usb). The dealer should know this unless they just gave you the USB one by default but you can't just plug the ipod in with your own cable.

You need the MDI iPhone cable, not the USB cable. VW dealers can supply, or you can get from overseas for cheaper.Originally posted by victorwhisky View PostI just tried hooking up my iPhone through my MDI (says MDI in glovebox) however comes up with MDI not recognised when I plug in my iPhone... May be that I am only using my USB iPhone cable...
Do I need to buy a special cable from VW to go to the USB type interface on the MDI?
Sorry for the simplistic questions... lot to learn on the first day!

Let us know how you go!Originally posted by Psyk View PostIt definately doesn't come up with "MDI" in the top row.
Car will be looked at by dealership in the next few days as it's on my order form.

It definately doesn't come up with "MDI" in the top row.Originally posted by Swallowtail View PostDoes your car order specify MDI? Or iPod adapter? If Media doesn't come up with "MDI" in the top row you don't have one fitted, or the car has not been coded correctly.

Thanks again.
Yup, I believe I only have the basic bluetooth kit as well, which is not too much of an issue as it does work with the iPhone. The iPod is a different issue as I specifically asked for the MDI interface...
I'm contacting the dealership for clarification on what happened.Last edited by Psyk; 28-10-2009, 12:02 AM.

The old Ipod kit has a white plug at the Ipod end of the cable, whereas the Ipod cable for the MDI/Media-In is all black.
The old Ipod kit should still charge the Iphone, too.

If the bluetooth integrates audio and nothing else, and works with your iPhone then it is NOT Premium Bluetooth, it's the Nokia basic Bluetooth kit that VW sell. See my posts in the Car Audio section on Bluetooth for RNS510. You don't want Premium, it doesn't work with iPhone.Originally posted by Psyk View PostHi Swallowtail,
Just read through your post(s) re: the iPhone and the RNS510 units and Bluetooth.
I picked up the Passat CC today and it has the Premium bluetooth kit fitted. I did notice that the audio integrates with the car but nothing else - this is acceptable to me and much better from what I had (or didn't have) previously.
One thing though is that the MDI doesn't charge my iPhone similar to graymalkin's issue. I checked "NO" once the iPhone suggests that it isn't a compatible accessory and wants to turn on airplane mode. However, there is no charging.
To select iPhone audio, I hit "Media" on the RNS510 and it highlights the "CD" section and I can play tracks from the iPhone - no artist, track or any info however.
Any other thoughts and suggestions?
To play the iPhone with a correctly fitted MDI, you select "Media" then on the top row of the touch screen select "MDI". If the iPhone is connected it will allow you to select artists etc, on the RNS510. If it doesn't then it's either not fitted it properly, or the dealer has fitted the el cheapo (and old) iPod adapter, not the MDI. MDI is a factory fit, inside the glovebox (the MDI 'box' pulls down from the roof of the glovebox), and it DOES charge an iPhone, out of the box, no modifications or extras required.

I *thought* that the UHV Low was the Nokia kit that VW fit, but I didn't think Harding fitted those. May be worth asking them what the VW part number is for the control unit they would fit. How much are they quoting for that?
You can buy the 9w3 / 729 / Skoda kits from overseas for under $600, and they are a *relatively* simple DIY if you are confident enough in pulling dash trims off etc. There are a couple of extra bits you need really to make it an OEM install but they are easily (and cheaply) available from VW dealers.

"UHV low"
Hi Swallowtail,
Thanks for the link to more info on the options. I've been in contact with Harding Performance in Brisbane who recommend the "UHV low kit". Is this the same as option 3, "the Skoda kit now known as the 9W3 kit: in your list?
What does "UHV Low" mean? I heard someone mention a "UHV High" somewhere. Do you know what this is?
Thanks in advance,
Graymalkin.

Have a look here http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=31461 for more info on options. Whilst it's talking about the RNS510 it basically applies regardless, although without the RNS510 or RCD510 I don't think you get on screen display, but just display in the MFD (in the instrument panel).
Austral should know better, as it is a conversation that has been had with them many times, including with me...
Can you please tell me a couple more pieces of information - do you have the iPod adapter or an MDI? They are different... The MDI does charge the iPhone, even with the message, which is normal for a lot of non-Apple accessories I believe. You just select NO to the flight mode question, and it charges anyway, and works fine. Also what head unit / stereo do you have? And is your MFD display red or white?
I will be selling my Fiscon shortly, as I have ordered one of the Skoda Bluetooth units (as it has voice control, which I decided I would like).
Happy to assist you in getting it sorted / fitted if I can.

Johnny Cash - you had it good! My old man adored Charley Pride - "Is anybody going to San Antonio or Phoenix Arizona..." yikesOriginally posted by apom View PostI think the years of being trapped in the back of my Father's 1974 Toyota Crown (butterscotch in colour of course) and listening to Johnny Cash has left me scared for life!
Mind you, the upside is that I can still sing "Burning Ring of Fire" like nobody else i know!
