Don't think its the hour long drive issue, as driving up to Coffs and back - the problem only occurred in the Bermuda triangle that seems to encompass Wyong (specifically on the freeway stretch between the two Wyong exits). I also feel it's the mapping Data (my DVD Version is CD_6613, v2) because at one point after it reset it had a big blank patch on the map over Wyong with no roads visible, and me travelling "off road" towards Sydney (at 110 km/h). Maybe Wyong is actually where the survivors of Oceanic 815 have ended up.

As far as the software version of my RNS510 - any way of determining this precisely ?

Any news from VW on the coast - perhaps others have had this issue with recent RNS510 purchases ?

Yesterday I made my first trip south on the F3 freeway and had the same problem going south to Sydney in the morning & north to Newcastle in the afternoon. Both times at pretty much the same place on the Central Coast.

I'm going with the RF interference theory. When going south I hit the central coast after about an hour of driving but when coming north it is about 1.5 hours so I'm rulling out an operating time based problem.

My boss also has an R36 with Sat Nav & makes regular trips to Sydney so I'll be quizzing him as to whether he has had similar problems.

FWIW both Garmin and Tom-Tom hand-held GPS have no problems around the Central Coast. Whereabouts was it crashing out, and was it roughly the same area both ways (eg Mooney-Mooney, Mt White, etc)?

unless the septics have a secret base we dont know about its very unlikely to be interference from RF. sat nav works by a line of sight upwards to the satellites and the main issue is usually inside a building you lose the signal .

I reckon it will turn out the area in question is not well covered by satellites and their orbits. you can check this with a handheld which tells you how many it is picking up but i havent found this function in the rns510. theoretically they need 3 minimum but practically it is 4. GPS recevievers can read up to 12.

OR i reckon it will turn out to be dodgy map dat and programming.

Bingo, corrupt data or firmware bugs relating to data is my hot tip.

After doing a few searches on the RNS510 it looks like people have experienced a myriad of problems with them so I wouldn't be surprise if the dealers are regularly updating firmware/OS each time a car goes in for a service.

I went to wyong again. Again the crash.
My worry is that there will be other crashspots in the map ROM and I will be somewhere unfamiliar, with not a clue where I am.
The routing on the mapping software is not a patch on my TOMTOM (in my phone) and that wasnt as good as my old navman.
Sadly I feel a bit dissapointed with with the RNS510. It feels like microsoft made the roms.

beg to differ: i am impressed with the rns510 over the bmw current system for lots of reasons, mainly its speed.

but one thing i cannot fathom and is available on most systems is an arrow showing the final destination direction & distance to destination.

it does come up when you start navigation in the MFD, but only for 5 seconds or so. the distance still shows which is handy.

has anyone found a way to keep this symbol showing?

I got my Car in January.

I was driving it to the central coast on day 3 (fromt the huntervalley NSW) using the sat nav on the RNS510 and midflight (so to speak) the screen goes black on a particular stretch of flat road. Then the machine keeps re-booting and freezing and then turning itself back on (keeps giving me the same messag "navigation starting" and freezing on that screen"

Took it back to the dealer, and he couldn't even test the machine it was so fried. Had it replaced.

Took a drive a 2 weeks ago (new RNS 510 in place) and at precisely the same stretch of road after makeing the same trip the same thing happened. For the whole time i was in Wyong (NSW) the machine kept resetting and re-booting. In fact for a while I had the keys out of the ignition and the CD player was still playing a funny warbling version of the song I was listening to.

Once I got out of wyong, the machine worked properly - had it tested and the service technician couldn't find fault with it.
My brother (who recently purchased a passat CC ) experienced similar problems, but only in wyong.

                      Has anyone else experienced this?

Just got back from a trip to Sydney in my R36 sedan and the exact same thing happened to me in the same area!!! Twice!! On my way into Sydney and then when I drove back out. There must be a dead zone for this specific unit. How Freaky!!

P.S The drive was absolutely awesome!! 8 hours from Gold Coast to Sydney

                        Mine too!

Definitely seems to be a problem near Wyong, twin servos on the F3. Yesterday travelling to Sydney from Maitland area my RNS510 crashed, powered off, it took everything with it, radio, navigation, maps etc and eventually powered back on, but didn't come back full function until I restarted the car in Sydney - SPOOOOOOOKY!! On the way home, the screen froze, but didn't power off, for a long time, well until I got home, I was exactly 88kms away, and worse still I couldn't change radio stations, ugggggggghhh! I went into VW dealer this morning and he said I was about the 5th local case and that they had reported the issue to Volkswagen, and were awaiting......he then told me of a similiar incident when he was working in Saudi, a VW driver with similiar issues, they made this customer drive them on the regular route that it occured, they worked out it was an American Military base interfering with the Sat Nav!!

                          Crashes near Wyong

My RNS510 crashes going north and south, before Wyong Rd turnoff to Tuggerah etc.
Done it every single time I drive past....

Are you saying there is a secret American Military base near Wyong? That would explain why the area should be avoided at all costs!

Looky here - I posted this same problem with my new 510 about 5 weeks ago - a week after I picked the car up. Same F3 time, same F3 place and kazzzzzzzzam Batman, it shutdown. Only way to retireve it was when I started it again some hours later. It happened about 3 times before I took it back to the dealer. They told me it's a software upgrade. They did that then very next day, same F3 time same F3 place and kazzzzzzzzap - it shut down. Frankly it's pissing me off. I drive this damm road from Mewcastle to Sydney 4 times a week and the thing shuts down 2 out of 4 trips. What's going on Batman?

Not going to help... the New England Highway ends in Newcastle.. the only ways to avoid the F3 and Wyong going to Sydney are through the Putty Road (Singleton to Windsor), or the old Great North Road through Wollombi/Bucketty/Wisemans Ferry.
