  • RNS510 issues

Just wondering if any others are getting frustrated with the unpredictable functionality of the RNS510?

My main problem revolves around using the "mix" setting on the HDD. It works perfectly well while the car's running, but after turning off the car and re-starting it, it's pot luck as to what happens next. Logically you would assume that it would continue playing on mix as previously instructed, but rarely does this happen. A variety of events could occur, such as:
    - Mix gets switched off and the songs in the last played folder are played in order
    - Mix continues, but only in the last folder that was accessed
    - The unit stalls on start-up and you have to switch to radio and then back to HDD to make it work, at which point a song is chosen randomly to be played.
    - The unit boots up playing a CD (if one is inserted).

You never can tell what's going to happen. Are others experiencing the same issues?

    Cheers
    Wyatt.

Judging from the 56 views and zero replies to this thread, either no-one's having this problem (do I have a dud unit?) or everyone's still loading their HDD to the hilt to test it out.

Can anyone confirm or reject this unwelcome unpredictability?

    Cheers
    Wyatt.

I haven't had your issues, but I've had a load of others..
Ocasionally the unit kept freezing, and the only way to reset it would be to turn the car off for 30 mins or pull the fuse out of the engine bay.
Upon starting backup the Nav functions eventually wouldn't load, and then the radio would freeze up and reset every 2.5 mins.
At the same location without fail (Jambaroo Pass) the unit would restart, I've noticed it at other locations too but have only been there once.

In any case, I did a factory reset through the setup menu choosing the wipe all option. I haven't had a problem since (I haven't been to Jambaroo Pass though).
Would be a pain in the rear end having to load all the songs back on the harddrive though. Luckily for me I haven't used that feature yet.

I have experienced different problems where the buttons controlling the audio (volume & mute) on steering wheel don't seem to work. Only fix is to turn ignition off and back on.

I'll also add that it often doesn't pause when using the star button on the steering wheel.

I thought the star was mute, not pause?

When you're playing off the HDD, it pauses the song rather than mutes it. At least it does some of the time.
              It certainly mutes the radio.
I don't know what it does when playing a CD.

Gent's - try a full reboot of your system,

The 3 keys at the top of the unit "<" & ">" & the "i" key. hold them all down simultaneously.

Although I don't use all those features you do, if there is any errors or bad communication between modules, this generally gets everything back in line!

Just an update to my OP: I had my 7500km service recently and mentioned to the service guy the HDD issues I was having. During the service they checked it and found that there was some new "software" available which they loaded (he may have meant firmware). The stability of the unit has increased dramatically, in fact I haven't had any issues at all. Apart from changing the appearance of the volume graphic when it appears, I haven't noticed any other changes.
Just a warning, updating the "software" will add an extra hour to your service.

                    Hey Wyatt,
Great to hear you've had a positive outcome to your issue.
Just a quick question...How come you had a 7500km service? I was told by my dealer/service team that the first major service was at 15,000km.

                    Cheers,

                    Jayse.

Actually, they call it a "health check" rather than a service. It was basically a multi-point safety check (electricals, wipers, seat belts, tyres, air ducts, battery, etc).
In addition to the HDD issue, I also raised a problem my somewhat vertically challenged wife was having with her driving position. She was struggling to get close enough to the pedals without having the seat in a very unnatural position. They found that there was a screw caught in the seat runner - the seat now travels the full length of it's runner and the wife is enjoying driving much more (not that she gets much of a chance).
It should have cost me $91 but they stuffed us around for ages when we'd arranged a pick up from the local shopping centre, so they gave it to us for free.

Was that $91 for the "health check"? Not so bad i guess...even better when you get it for free!!
Yep, my wife suffers the same probs....
                          1) She's vertically challenged
                          2) She doesn't get much of a chance to drive the .:R36
