Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Another my Passat thread

Hi everyone, just got told about this forum from a guy in the UK who is emigrating this year. I hope to be down there myself by the end of the year.

Here's a couple of my 1991 Passat GT G60 syncro. Unfortunately it's LHD so not much use down under

    Cheers

    Gavin

    Now I understand "H100"!

You know, I've seen lots of that vintage Passat on ebay. But I don't like the front. Rear and sides are fine. It never came here so I guess I never had time to get used to it. Wouldn't mind a diesel, though!

Maybe this'll work. Some shots of the custom exhaust I had made which was, at £300, a third of the Stealer price. I paid a grand for the car so couldn't justify a VW system at that money.

Nah no good either except for the first picture.
        I'll have another go tomorrow.

            The front!

The front's growing on me! At first I thought it was very '80s, but it's looking better all of the time. Isn't this a pretty heavy car? How does it go with the 1.6 diesel? Turbocharged? See a lot of wagons for sale on ebay, but few sedans. Why?

The front is a bit dated. Most of them just had a 1.8 golf engine in, so were a bit underpowered. lots of electrical probs at this age. 16v or vr6 would be the go, but not many about in UK. The wagon was far more useful in britain, as a nation with weather too bad to have a ute.

Yeah there`d be some good cheap Passat 1.9TDi Wagons in the UK. Good if you are a diesel nut.

The estates of this era are still very popular. They fetch more money than the saloons. The TD in my shape was a snail. The facelifted ones with the 90horse TDi are like gold dust and commend daft money. The cheapest of the B5s cost the same as top dollar B4s.

My syncro in particular is heavy with the 4WD. The G60 motor kills the consumption. Assuming the KMH speedo is right it does 540 KM on a 15gal/75litre tank. Someone do the maths cos I daren't

The most popular B3s are the 2 litre 8Valvers very commond from 1990 onwards.

                    Cheers for now

                      Station wagons

Never liked estates. Although I had a '76 Passat station wagon when my kids were babies. Very practical and very fast. Could get the folding cot and baby gear, esky (very important!) and other essentials in with no probs. But they are too volumious, "boom" on rough roads, poor on security and the rear seats are not very comfortable. Rear seat passengers comment that they feel "exposed". Prefer sedans.

my parents ran an '89 model station wagon from brand new with the digipants 1.8 8v

it always handled very well- thick anti roll bars and good brakes

engine went pop at 178k miles

after that we turned it into the farm hack- we put a kr 1.8 16v (50mm inlets) in it with the 8v gearbox

it lacked torque but was a monster at revs- we caned the bejeesuss out of it for years- regularly taking it round to 6900- 7100 rpm

overtaking in 2nd or 3rd was great (speedo used to read 95-105mph in third at silly revs!)

my father buried it in a field last year after it failed its MOT (rego) as was full of rust- we couldn't bear to part with it after 16 years faithful service

cylinder head etc is sitting in a shed in the uk for future project

all up it was a really great car- and very useful for hauling stuff around in
