Arteon Intercooler Recommendations?

Just showing you the results. The fact that the Wagner has 70mm inlet/outlet makes little to no difference. It performed well, but no better than other intercoolers which are cheaper, therefore no need to spend the money unless you specifically want that particular brand.

The Wagners are approx $1,900, so the 2nd more expensive after Racingline.

also... is the turbo on the GTI big enough to fully utilise the wagner capacity which its meant for.... bigger power?? it is outperformed by the do88 unit in some tests but maybe the do88 unit is more suited to the gti and its turbo output and will become a bottleneck at higher power or bigger turbo setups...... is the do88 unit a straight swap with the same piping sizes as the stock specs?? i did not find any of these specs on the do88 website itself as they just want people to go with their Brand Name Security and some flashy sales stats (X% increased flow) e.t.c.. i am not trashing do88 either im sure its a great intercooler but can someone get me some specs please... even if u measure it up urself

Are you talking about the GTI used for testing in those links? If so, he has a hybrid IS38 so its performing at higher than normal GTI/R power, boost and airflow levels.

I never measured the inlet and outlets of the DO88 - im sure they are the same or similar to all the other aftermarket intercoolers? It performs fine so why fuss over inlet/outlet diameters.

As for their "flashy sales stats (x% increased flow)" this is no different to what every other company does when marketing their intercoolers/intakes/exhaust/tunes etc. Its a direct fit intercooler (just like all the others) so the L x H dimensions are basically identical as the stock intercooler, just the thickness differs, then end tank design. Obviously the quality of the core itself is very important and I dare say this is the biggest factor to consider between options.

He doesnt specify how much HP hes putting out or the dimensions of any of the coolers.. therefore his experiment is null and void to me because he doesnt give me the information thats relevant to me.

U should get a ruler and measure the diameter (straight line) to see how big the openings are on inlet and oulet.. and also the thickness of the core.... according to my neighbour who used to work on race / drag cars and many many threads (100s of pages) of reading beyond the one you linked me to (read that a while ago and found it fun but sort of useless).. The bigger the inlet and outlet..the faster it cools the temperature going into the tank and with a large outlet has the size to release the more condensed air, allowing for better flow from higher PSI / more pressure.. usually start seeing the benefits at 500+hp on the wagner sized intercoolers but the smaller ones still work... not saying they dont.. . Personally i Went for a 73mm inlet and outlet coz its available to me and makes sense... no retailers actually make them with these sizes except big drag power IC's 1000+hp for r34 - r35 GTR e.t.c... inlets and oulets start at 76mm+ and im sure if i was to get one at retail im paying well over 2k for that.

The retailers simply dont make them that big to cut costs on the manfucture especially if u have 5 companies using the same plants to manufacture and the tubing (especially if u can use oem size tubing from a very cheap supplier in china at $1 a peice and retail for 200 rather than having to make MOQ custom moulds e.t.c & going against the grain of the industry and putting big inlet/oulet... most of these guys are just business men who wanna make some bucks.. Wagner are going against the grain with their inlet /oulet sizes and dimensions and u guys pay for it in the end.

also dont forget my friends. most of ur car is made up of parts made in china... shipped to germany or wherever for assembly into a car.

not all the ebay / PX / magic / majesty units are WANGERS tho so how do you know which one does he have .. he just states its an ebay / majesty or whatever IC.. does he have 60mm inlet, 65mm inlet, 70mm inlet or 73mm inlet.. he does not even show the specs of the EBAY unit he just dismisses it as a knockoff... nor does he confirm the specs of ANY of the units tested.. he just puts the brand names and tells u which one is "best"...

Also.. how do you know the guys ebay IC is the same one that im about to install.. I am only talking about my one that i am about to install not some random guy that compared 20 intercoolers all for different purposes and functions and told u which Brand Name is best.

So to confirm again.. there are multiple "brandname" intercoolers on ebay.. .. like ive said for the 10th time.. u need to check the spec sheet / dimensions on them to know which one ur buying as it directly matches up with the 'retail' units... barplate/tubefin.. dimensions. inlet outlets. one might be a mishi , one might be wagner.. one might be IE. e.t.c e.t.c

If you look at the various photos I posted here you will see the core thickness is approx 56-57mm

The core dimensions (other than thickness) are all basically identical to the stock intercooler as you physically cant fit a larger core in the space. So core size is largely irrelevant. Unless you go for a true front mount intercooler, you are physically limited with what you can fit in the stock location on a Golf (or other MQB platform car).

Unless you are making huge amounts of power, you dont need 3" inlets and outlets. Yes there is a reason why 700kw+ GTR's and Supra's etc use huge intercoolers, its because they flow enough air (big engine + big turbo + high boost) to need that size pipework to avoid restrictions. A Golf with any of the available bolt on turbo's does not need this.

Not sure mate - sorry. It depends on where the front assist radar is located on the car and other available space. With the Golf's, there are a few front mount choices, but they only fit if the car does not have the front assist radar.

The stock replacement ones work well so really there is no need to go down the front mount route unless you specifically want one.

I chose to buy the one that I bought. Certainly didn't "need" to, I wanted to. I like to buy good quality parts for my car as I take a lot of pride in my vehicles. As I mentioned to you earlier in this thread, literally ANY intercooler would be an improvement over the stock item - that includes any Chinese ebay jobbies as well.

As proven by this guy doing the testing, not all intercoolers are the same. No doubt the chinese Wanger will be an improvement over stock, but you are kidding yourself if you think it will perform as well as the big name brands using high quality cores and end tanks. Does it matter in the real world - probably not. Will there be any performance advantage in the real world - probably not.

You like to buy chinese parts (tyres/intake/intercooler etc) which I do not agree with - but that's your choice.

Yeah, AFAIK - it has the front assist radar built into the front VW emblem/badge.

Either way, it sounds like the stock replacement options are more than I need to take it to stage 3.
