  • A year with an Arteon

To the long term owners, what are your thoughts?

    Would you do it again?

Do you look at another car with regret?

Do you look at another car with relief?

    Loves?

    Hates?

    ----

    Would you do it again?

Yes. But I plan on keeping this car past warranty (maybe 6 years) unless it gives me grief.

Do you look at another car with regret?

I really like the new Volvo S60 T6 Rdesign which seems like a similar car feature and price wise.

Do you look at another car with relief?

I originally wanted a Tiguan. I'm glad I didn't get it as the Arteon is better suited to my needs. I still like the Tiguan.

    Loves?

Still gets comments from others wondering what it is with compliments.
    Music sounds great.
Easier to write what I hate (because I like so much)

    Hates?

How effortless the car is to drive. It is fast but does not feel fast.
    The exhaust note is crap.
It changes gears up and down basically when ever it wants even in Manual Sports Mode.
Sunroof is not worth the added stresses and complications.
Wanting to mod it but remembering it's meant to be a family car.
    3 year warranty

        Would you do it again?

I've only got this car for 3 more years (it was on a 4yr finance term where at the end I drive back into a dealership and throw the keys back at them). I would consider another Arteon. I picked it as an upgrade to my Golf R for the extra space. Depending on our needs in 3yrs time, I can see my shortlist being another Arteon, Audi S3 sedan or possibly an A5 Sportback. I'm also not discounting 100% electric cars that may be available in 3yrs time.

Do you look at another car with regret?
Originally I had wondered if I should have saved some money and gone with a Skoda Superb Sportline, but I'm glad I didn't and stuck with the Arteon. My wife has a Superb Wagon and while it's great and good value, the Arteon is just that bit more polished on the interior and I prefer it.

Do you look at another car with relief?
Not really. I spent 6 months figuring out what car I wanted and in the end made the decision about the Arteon, and glad I stuck with it. I'll do the same for the next car. 6 months out from handing it back I'll start seeing what's available and really putting down into a spreadsheet the pro's and con's of each.

        Loves?

Still turns heads, and people ask me what it is.
Not many of them around so it stands out a bit more.
Really comfortable place to be and I love the tech.
I've found the fuel economy really, really good.
The car felt much better after I did some of the VCDS mods and flipped it to "Audi" mode. This removed a lot of the "sponginess" of the throttle and the general feel of the car.

        Hates?
Agreed on the rubbish exhaust note - which is more rubbish when you delete the resonator.

In traffic I still get the parking sensors trigger sometimes when a car passes me. This is annoying when listening to a podcast as I need to cancel the parking senor and then skip back 15sec on spotify to listen to what I just missed.

I put the key fob in my pocket and twice now I've come back to the car and the boot is wide open. When in my pocket and I sit down it must press the button and open the boot. This is a bit concerning as yesterday when it happened at least my car was in the work carpark, but previously when it happened my car was parked on a busy public street, and I didn't know my boot was open until I got back to the car sometime later. Lucky nothing was taken.

My car #2: MY22 Volvo XC40 Pure Electric

          Would you do it again?
Yep, definitely. It is still one of the best looking cars on the road. Performance is easily good enough to have some fun in and fully loaded with family on board it still has plenty of go for overtaking. I'm 6'4 and one son has hit 6'3, even with the sunroof we have sufficient headroom (only just admittedly) and legroom is more than adequate.

Do you look at another car with regret?
I have a soft spot for the Alfa Giulia Veloce. Great looking car also, but when I was shopping I checked them and the Stelvio out. Just not enough leg room for us, we do a lot of country driving so long distance comfort is critical. Plus I have had Italian cars before, great to drive but the little "design features" that Alfisti like to call character drive me mad and I still have doubts about long term reliability.

Do you look at another car with relief?
Volvo XC60. Had one before and it was a great car, but loving not being in an SUV and the new 60 had no rear space. MB C300, lovely looking car, especially with the AMG kit, and no doubt a very good drive, but I just couldn't see the value in it compared to the Arteon over the course of a lease.

          Loves?
Comfort, performance (try it on a mountain road, you wont be disappointed), boot space (I can get a large dual suspension mountain bike in the boot, wheels on) and versatility, design and looks. Surprisingly good fuel economy if you don't 'boost everywhere.

          Hates?
No DAB, HUD is a gimmick imo, exhaust note completely underwhelming, launch control is impossible to dial up at short notice (mine doesn't have the button)

            Probably. I love my Arteon.

Do you look at another car with regret?
All Jaguar's. Sunroof, I wish mine had a sunroof. Would like to experience it just once on a car.

Do you look at another car with relief?
I still have my TDI Golf and after using it for a few days I feel so happy getting back in the Arteon.

            Hates?
Colour. Manganese Grey is impossible to keep looking clean. Crappy limestone water always leaves spots after washing it. Next car will be a light colour.
            The cost.
After watching Mighty Car Mods work on a Golf R wolfsburg I want to waste cash on a full upgrade of stuff. Maybe a stage 2 or 3. After the warranty has expired.
            3 year warranty.
Premium fuel. I've been spoiled by my tuned TDI for economy.

Overall she's a stunning beauty and the best car I've ever owned.

How’d you go with your warranty after this mod? Looking to do the same on my GTI.

I haven't had to make a warranty claim yet, but I doubt I'd have any problem with it. It's not an "aftermarket" mod, I'm simply enabling something that's already in the software. No different to enabling rain sensing auto-close etc.

Not at current price. Needs to go back to being $10,000 cheaper.

Do you look at another car with regret?

                  No.

Do you look at another car with relief?

                  No.

                  Loves?

The way it looks, ride quality, handling, performance, interior room, active info display, 360 degree camera, high spec level, boot space, 5 year warranty.
                  Magnificent grand tourer!

                  Hates?

Exhaust note - replace with Akropovic like on Golf R
                  Tacky HUD
                  Sunroof rattles something awful.
Infotainment & driver assist systems will start to look dated compared to upcoming Passat.

Seems to be a common theme with the "hates".

                    Thanks for adding your opinion.

                      Would you do it again?

Yes, I love the fact that it's not a common car on the roads.

Do you look at another car with regret?

At the price point, I don't think there is another car that compares with all the features of the Arteon.

Do you look at another car with relief?

I was originally tossing up between the Arteon and the Stinger. When I see the Kia on the roads I tell myself I made the right choice.

                      Loves?

                      Definitely the looks.
                      Dynaudio system sounds great.
On these cold mornings the heated seats are a blessing.
                      Sports mode.
                      Huge boot space.

                      Hates?

Coming from an SUV it's a slightly harsher ride for my wife who sits at the back with the baby. No complaints from me though.
Rattling from the driver side window. Service couldn't find anything apparently.
                      Lack of cooled seats.
The driver seat has raised sides which I graze every time I get in and out. Consequently the stitching is starting to fray.

                        Would you do it again?

Yes, if they brought out an Arteon R.

Do you look at another car with regret?

Sometimes I look at the Audi S3 and regret not test driving it. I know deep down it was too small for me though. I need a car with good boot space.

Do you look at another car with relief?

Yep. The Tiguan 162tsi r line. I originally wanted one as it ticked all the boxes on paper. But after test driving it I wasn’t a fan.
Golf R wagon. Kinda. I loved the wagon R on paper also. After driving it and the Arteon back to back I found the Arteon offered so much more.

                        Loves?

The way it looks, the down low torque. The safety tech. The boot space. The fact there’s not many on the road.

                        Hates?

The small phone holder. No volume knob. The warning pop ups that come up on the infotainment. The auto stop. No sunglass holder.
