A large part of buying decision would be emotional and for alot of people, that means a V10 is just downright sexy!

For me, it will always be the ultimate hero touareg. Yes I concur with some that the R5 is supposedly the intended hero car that VW sends to far flung corners of the universe, runs on an oily rag, cheap to maintain and most importantly for VW is the spearhead that penetrates new sales market. But hey the V10 is two R5s

Not bagging the V6, just that a V6 just doesn't have the same ring for me.

In fact if anything I'll always regard a V6 (engines in general) as some thing designers put together to save a couple of big end bearings and reduce length so it fits under the bonnet. It isn't the smoothest config, nor is it the most torquey. It's a perfect pragmatic engine for a pragmatic buyer but pragmatic is not sexy.
    Cheers

      Hello Flospologti,
I think this thread is losing track of your initial question on what a real world price a V10 TDI would be worth.

First thing you must look at is that a 2005 model would most likely been purchased as a lease vehicle (private or company) as $140,000 is not an amount most car buyers throw around. These leases are normally 3 to 4 years, so there fore you would not being seeing 2nd hand ones on the market until early 2008 minimum. Having a good look around over the pass few months it appears that in general the V10’s are a little light on the used vehicle market. It looks like ones that do come up are snapped in very fast. Of those I have seen they range from $75,000 for like Kms to about $90,000 for 10,000 km less in the 2004 model.

You may be lucky and find a current owner willing to give you the first offer over a trade but at this end of the car market most just trade up via the dealerships.
Maybe have a talk to some VW dealers on what is around or they know of coming up.

Maybe if you are after something to move 3.5 tons look to another brand (please other dubbers don’t disavow me just yet), as there are some good models available at the same money very capable of that ability running V8 petrol or diesel motors if you are after that.

I think enough has been said on pros and cons but don’t go anywhere near something without warranty regardless of what you decide.

Just give the V6Tdi some time.
R5 engine will become obsolete thanks to its unit injector fuel system. The V10 shares the same (or perhaps it's the other way around).
Of course both are the icons and V6 is just something added.
