  • Rear main seal - 2nd time

We have a 2012 Touareg V6 TDCI which needed a new rear main seal. AU$5,000 later it was no longer leaking.
But at the next service they said the rear seal was leaking again. We decided to wait and see how bad it got. Now, coming up for the next service at 225,000 km it's putting oil over the rear tailgate and onto whatever we tow.

So now we need to decide if we sink more money into it or ditch it.

It's always possible that they put the apprentice onto fitting the seal and they damaged it, but it kind of seems unlikely given how basic oil seal fitting is.
So I'm suspicious that the crank surface might be damaged and a new seal is simply going to go the same way just as quickly. I very much doubt getting a damaged crank repaired is viable for a car of this value.

Does anyone have any experience with these things?
Do the cranks have a history of wearing and damaging seals?
    Are the seals just poor?
Is there a particular technique to fitting these seals that might not have been followed?

    Thanks
    Peter
