We have a 2012 Touareg V6 TDCI which needed a new rear main seal. AU$5,000 later it was no longer leaking.
But at the next service they said the rear seal was leaking again. We decided to wait and see how bad it got. Now, coming up for the next service at 225,000 km it's putting oil over the rear...
